Bird -

Was 'shine' popular in TX when you were a lawman?

Of course I was a city cop in Dallas, but I never personally knew of any being made in this area. In fact, the only shine I guess I've seen was from Kentucky.

Hi Scotty,

Sorry if I sounded like I was critisizing or being negative. I'm all for everyone being able to do what they want with there bodies and fully support drinking, smoking and eating junk food. I do two out of three myself!!!

Moonshine scares me because of all the horror stories. I know lots of people go their entire lives drinking it and never have a side effect. But there are allot of others out there who suffer the rest of their lives from one night of having fun.

It's not for me, but I'm chicken on allot of things, LOL

Bird a wise man told me it affected ones eyesight, so I drank just enough that I needed thick glasses. :D

All kidding aside I know that in some cases it has been deadly and that's no joke.

I think the days of making for profit are almost gone anyway as the illegal cash crop in the hills seems to be alot more green these days.

I've heard of people using everything from chicken manure to car radiators in the past to facilitate faster production - No wonder people had problems when they drank the stuff made by these jerks

People who still make it in the traditional manner as a hobby to consume by themselves and friends won't jeopardize their own life by using improper equipment or ingredients.

Not to anyone in particular:

There's a crude test that can be done for lead content. If the distiller uses radiators for condensers, you get lead from the solder in the product.

So, take a small amount of the "fluid" in question, and add 1 drop of muriatic acid (or concentrated HCl). If you see a white cloud in the liquid that gradually drifts to the bottom, there's probably lead in it. This won't tell you if there's just a tiny amount in there though.

Of course, this won't tell you if it's been watered down with wood alcohol (methanol) paint thinner or other dangerous fluids.

When a friend left the Marine Corps from Camp LeJuene in the mid 70's his friends gave him 3 gallons of white lightning as a going away present. He'd sent most of his belongings via a moving company and was driving to New Hampshire. Along the Jersey Turnpike he had a flat. Since the spare was under a lot of stuff in his station wagon he had to unload it. While changing the tire along comes a seasoned State Trooper. The trooper asked my friend if he needed assistance. He replied that he did not and was returning home to NH. The trooper silently looked over the wagon with North Carolina plates, Marine Corps stickers, friend's wife & 3 kids, two hound dogs, pile of luggage, several firearms and said to Don - 'Son, I'm not even going to ask what's in those jugs - just fix that tire and get the h*ll out of New Jersey!!'

There are still a few artisans around that cook off a few gallons each year because it's their family tradition. A old friend has given me a quart annually for many years now, it's his Christmas present to me. I save it for special occasions and guests. Scott vt is right, nothing i know of has the characture of good shine.
