I spent many years working in prisons and the social engineers told us that we must never call prisoners crims, cons, villains etc, we then referred to them as cherubs.

Here in the states, they are sometimes referred to as customers. btw, corrections officer job turnovers can be brisk.

I was held at gun point [very rough AK 47s] by some irregular militia in the bush lands of Zimbabwe. It was around 1982 and things still hadn't totally cooled off from the war -- lots of straggler units roaming the countryside with guns. We had committed the ultra crime of taking a picture of a monument not approved for pictures by the Ministry of Culture [something like that]. It was one of those moments when you realize that your US passport is worthless in their eyes and a little voice in your head says "uh oh, this could be it." I didn't like it.
