Necessity of an oil change

Did he recommend using their 5-40 oil? At those temps you mention, it'd probably be easier starting than it is with 15-40..

No he said the 15w40 was fine for the amount of times I was starting it,and the temps we have here.I also run the 15w40 7000 in my air cooled small engines,mostly Kohler Commands, Dodge Cummins and GMC 8.1. I love this oil so far

First, I want to state I am by no means an expert on oil, or petroleum, however, I do know there are 4 things required for acids to form in oil. Those four things are: oxygen, sulfur, water, and heat. The acid that forms is... you guessed it, sulfuric acid. Was it the sulfur that que'd you in? Without the heat and the sulfur caused by the combustion proccess you're left with oxygen and water. The water is not likely if you have good ventilation, and the oxygen is being kept at bay with the additive package in the oil. It contains... well... right again, anti oxygens. All this changes though once you put any time on that fresh oil. YMMV.
