Necessity of engine block heater?

After thinking about it a little bit more, I just called my dealer that I have my New Holland TC24D ordered through and had him order me a block heater. $40 + free install. If I only have to use it a couple of times a year it'll still be worth it. I usually end up using the block heater on my Silverado 2 - 3 times a year - and it is a gasser. Not that the Silverado wouldn't start w/o it, but it sure does sound better starting when that oil flows immediately. For the same price on the tractor as what the trucks was I decided to go ahead and get it.

By way of reference, I paid $23.97, which included shipping to my house, for the block heater for my TC25D.

Sounds like you got a great deal. Where did you get it for that price? How difficult are these things to install? Worst case scenario they charged me a $16 installation fee when I compare my price to yours. Once I get beyond the "newness" of that tractor I will probably shop around more for items - well the newness and everyone here was saying let the dealer install.

I got it at Messick's This is the same place I bought my tractor.

You have to drain some coolant first. Pull the plug out of the block (front driver's left, about midway up), put the heater in, tighten the screw, tie wrap the cord to the frame, pour the coolant back in, check for leaks. Maybe 30 minutes of work.

The official NH block heater (NH part # but made by someone else) cost me $20. Even at that, $20 install is still not bad. It takes some time but it's not too difficult.
