Tom, believe it or not, I am so cheap that I dream of stuff like that (obviously just like you do):)
I'd like to sew up the gash with steel thread then weld it shut with rubber.

I was thinking of 1/4" hardware cloth in side and the boot or 2 over it to keep the tube from flowing in to it.

Rob,

Can you fill the tire with foam? I've been playing the flat tire game with mine, and after five years and 350 hours, I'm not even halfway through with my tread. I keep thinking of foaming them anyway, but then maybe waiting until I need new ones and doing it then. Either way, I want solid, foam filled front tires.
From what I understand, they drill a hole in your tire so teh foam can expand, then cut off the excess foam and cover the hole with some rubber compound. Your tire might be perferct for this.

I was thinking of lining the tire with fiberglass high quality cloth. It would flex, not chaff or create heat. Not dig into inner tire or tube. :)

Do R4's have thicker side walls? I don't know.

Well, Ken came through and found East Bay Tires, a local source.
He gave me the contact and phone number so I set up an account with them through my business. Ken's tires were $119 each for 7.5 x 16's and mine were $129 each. They charged me 5 bucks to deliver all 4 to my home in Rancho.

Mine are BKT 6 ply R-1 Ag tires.
They look pretty much like the stock Chinese tires except a few minor differences. The new tires are the same size but have only 15 pairs of rubber lugs around the diameter whereas the stock tires have 18. The stock tire's lugs are also a little wider and have less angle to them. The stock tires look more industrial (more square) than the new tires.

Anyway, here are some photos side by side.
First one is a side view of the new tire on the left and the old tire still mounted on the rim. The next photo shows their profile, again the old tire on the rim. The third photo shows the new tire mounted on the rim. Notice how their shape changes (tallness) once mounted.

I changed the tires myself and it was a real bear!
I did the previous boot repairs myself too, but I never had the tire completely off the rim before. I had taken the inner tubes out so I could make the sidewall repair, so I only had one tire bead off the rim. This time I had to take the whole tire off ... both of them and then put the new ones back on. I smashed my hands up pretty good a couple times because my tire irons were so short. I slipped several times.

After several hours of wrestling with them, I got it all done.
Here's how I did it but I'm getting too old for this stuff. First I used the FEL to lift up the front of the tractor and blocked it up. Then I used a farm jack to break the beads. I used some short pry bars to get the old tires off and the new ones on along with a good soaking of soap and water. I used the same tubes because they are still good ... no leaks or tears.
Final photo shows the new tires back on the tractor.
Now I'm half dead.

Another nice job Rob. Could you have just taken the wheels and tires off the tractor and taken them to town along with the new tires and had a service station break them down and mount them up? Or is there something special about tractor tires where they can not do this?

Hi Chris,
I could have done that, but I thought it would be easier than it turned out to be. I had broken them down before but it was harder getting the rim completely out.
Next time for sure I will do that!!!
