I have a lightweight weedeater brand weedeater I use for my lawn. I need something more powerful though for cutting weeds and brush around my trees in the wooded area of my property. I also want one that can have a pole saw attachment. I was looking at the troy bilt units at lowes, but all the negative reviews have scared me away from those. What is a good one to get?

I'm sure there are other good ones, too, but I'd buy a Stihl. I've not owned one with a pole saw attachment, but I have had one with the circle saw that would cut down 4" trees pretty easily. However, currently in town I just have the FS55RC and only use .095" string.

How heavy is the brush?

vines and small brush no bigger than 1 inch. My bushhog takes care of most of the stuff, but can't get up close to the trees.

I've had the same Stihl trimmer for 15 years, and its always been reliable and plenty powerful enough for trimming around my 12 acre place. I also have a Stihl 028 Farm Boss chain saw that's 30 years old. Had to replace the air filter periodically and the ignition harness twice and the motor mounts once. Darn good stuff IMHP.

I have a stihl FS120 and this thing cuts small trees no problem. I have a saw blade for larger trees, i find the twin edge blade will cut up to 1 inch with very little problems. Sthil will tell you the pole saw does not attach to these trimmers, but I have the bush(hedge)trimmer added to mine. All that you need to do is remove the grass cutting head and remove the bar from the saw attachment and the two will bolt together. If the extra length is required you can buy the coupler.

If a new Stihl price tag scares you, keep your eye out for a used one. I got a FS86 for $75 and its been used but runs like new as far as I can tell. I don't have a pole saw attachment but you could check with an honest dealer if they can get one for the older brush saws.

i agree the stihl would be hard to beat. you might look at their kombi system, it allows you to use up to 13 attachments including a pole saw. the km 90 would be my choice i think the km 55 is to small to run a pole saw.

Stihl definitely is the way to go, I have had to try several brands as the "store" brands just wouldn;t keep up or kept wearing out around my property. The next best one I used was a Husqvarna, but went to the Stihl deler the other day. Sure their prices are higher but the product is soooo much better.

I have a Troy-built and a Toro--- and would advise you go with the Stihl. That's what I'll replace these with when I can. Regardless, the attachments I use are a Grass Gator Load N' Cut string head for the line trimmer, a 4 sided blade cutter, and a pole saw.

The one nice part of having multiple units is less "swapping" attachments. The bad part is NONE of these units like Ethanol and I have had to have the hoses in the tanks replaced on both units. I'm trying a fuel treatment now and we'll see if that helps, but who knows
