Larry,
If you mean what symptoms do you watch for if you have been bitten by a tick, they are usually described as flu-like. That covers lots of ground doesn't it? You usually see reddening around the bite, and the classic Lime disease rash is described as a bullseye red rash with the bite at the center. My bite looked something like that, but the doc said real Lime disease isn't common here. On the other hand, any tick or any other blood sucking insect is likely to carry various nasty bacteria and viruses. The immune system of most healthy adults can deal effectively with the majority of the minor "infections" that result from bites, but there will be the occassional mega dose of nasties, and some diseases, like Lime and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever may be more easily transmitted by an infected carrier insect. As to dealing with ticks, this spring we got into the habit of checking ourselves and each other pretty thoroughly after working outside. The adult ticks are easily found. The nymphs require a close inspection, unless you are "lucky" like me and have a fast reaction to their bite. I don't think I picked up many ticks while mowing, at least after I finally cut back the tree limbs which whacked me as I mowed along the tree lines. However, whenever I waded into the brush I'd get lots of the @#$% things.

Funny you should mention bees. I was in my truck Friday and felt something messing around the back of my neck, so I brushed it away. Got stung at the small joint on my left ring finger.

No being allergic, I didn't think too much of it (but did have some choice words), until about 1/2 mile later. Started burning like crazy and raised up a blister at the bite location. I was in town and close to the hospital, so I started heading that way, figuring I'd better watch for breathing and swallowing problems. After about 15 minutes, I felt okay, so I went about my business.

Friday night, the middle knuckle started to swell and the finger got stiff. Saturday, same thing plus the knuckle was starting to look bruised. Two days of benadryl and soaking in epsom salts and the swelling and stiffness are gone but the darn thing still itches like crazy. Could hardly sleep Friday night, kept waking up scratching and that started it aching...

Still don't know what hit me, never did find or see anything in the truck. You guys know where I can get a steel suit that could be used for driving?

Sounds like something mean and nasty got ahold of you! For all the fun I have on my tractor, when I'm bushogging, running over a yellow jacket nest is first and foremost on my mind. Once you've done it once, you never forget! Forget the steel suit...for $49.95 you can get a first class beekeepers suit. You know, if they made them in camo more of us might by them!

Check out the "chigger and tick thread" we had a few months back. I'm pretty sure it was here in the Rural area. The bottom line to prevent the %^&*( from getting you is to soak clothes in Permerthrin. I have done this per the conversation we had and after six to eight weeks I have not had any ticks directory on me. The first couple of weeks wearing the treated clothes I found three ticks, two on my hand and one on my leg. The two on my hand were from brushing up against some brush. The one on my leg had climbed up from my boots, I think, but the chemical killed him.

This weekend, I walked into FOUR chigger nests. Almost all of them died on my legs. A few managed to get past the tucked in pants, Ace bandages, and two sets of socks to get my legs. I had at least 300-400 chiggers on me during the morning. Easy. Without the treated pants I would have been beyond hurting! /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif

Keeping the brush and grass mowed short really helps keeping the chiggers and ticks under control.

There are some clothes that are made to keep squeeters from you. I have a suit at home but have only used it a couple of times. Its a camo suit and I got it from Florida. Its designed to keep the no see ums and squeeters from biting. It would do a pretty good job of keeping bees from biting as well....

Hope this helps...
