Sure they can do 8", but it all depends on the type of soil and moisture content. But they won't do it in one pass and neither will their competitors.

Unless you get into a really large, heavy duty tiller - you will find 6"-7" is pretty much the norm. It may go a little deeper on a second go around or when tilling land that's already been broken with something like a disk harrow.
It makes little difference what the manufacturer says - on unbroken ground that's what the normal, homeowner, tiller will do. I had a pto tiller and the first pass on unbroken ground - I was doing good to get 5". I probably got an inch or two more on the second pass.
Even a moldboard plow will be maxing out to go 8" unless you have a really big one - like an 18" or 20".

No, multiple passes is absolutely no problem. I was just trying to hit 8" of depth since thats what Im used to with my troy bilt hand machine. I have never had a 6' tiller for my tractor. I know it can do 6.5", but didn't know if it would drop down another couple of inches if I ran over it multiple times.
So, you guys are saying that it will?
My other question is, how is the quality of this version? Will it be OK with a 50HP PTO tractor? Will it be durable enough for monthly use of up to an acre of work? It would pretty much be the same areas...so not unbroken ground every time. I am working black gumbo.

The 12 series has a 50 hp gearbox. With a 15" rotor diameter, it is capable of tilling 7" deep all day long but it could do 8 or more in the soft spots.
The thing with the rtr series is it doesn't like rocks or deep mulch. I think you would be happier with the rta series. Also, if you are buying new, have a talk with your dealer about the 20 series. It is about 225 pounds heaver.

Im looking at the 20 series, but its ALMOST twice as much.... Im having a trouble justifying costs of this brand. Im looking at the Ansung and others, and the cost of their heavy duty, 8" depth, 915lb model is the same as the standard duty Landpride. Is this the cost of American labor and parts?
Am I missing something? Why is the landpride standard duty twice as much as heavy duty gear drive units of competitors (heavier built, more weight, more tines, better drives, but half the cost)? Can anyone shed light on that? Maybe the YJR074 Ansung is not Reverse Rotating?

With that HP take a look at the Ansung brand Terraforce units. You could run a YJR80 or the 74" like I have. About the same price except they are built much heavier, which is good in a tiller.
In my humble opinion you will not want reverse tine rotation as it throws stuff into you tractor and will keep hitting the same rock over and over. When mine hits a rock, it is out the back on top where I can pick up later.
BTW - I am running the YJR074 with only 26.5 HP so that tells you how efficient they are, especially as all drive shaft bearings are oil bath. No greased sleeves in this gear driven unit.

I don't have many rocks in my area. In fact, the only ones there are would be ones that were put there by humans. The primary purpose of this tiller is planting, so, having it spit things out on TOP of the ground is pretty much the opposite of what I want to do isnt it? Seems like a deep till, spread seeds, and a shallow till would sew seeds more effectively. No?
