the real question is what you anticipate for future needs beyond the machine you're currently looking for

......back to my original point. I don't like to buy entry level power equipment and an entry level commercial machine just went from $8k to $9500. I won't spend that on a single purpose machine - want a platform to build upon. My walk behind, zero turn is 46 years old (really) and only 36" wide. I bought it new for $1200 when I had a landscaping business. I just can't justify it in my mind. My 67 year old hands, forearms and elbows are worn out (partially due to the mower). I walk 5 miles a day 5 days a week, so the legs are good. Time to give in.

Quite frankly, I'm not convinced the BX or Series 1 platforms are the right "platform" to build upon.

Really struggling with old vs new. I like wrenching on stuff, so no issue there.

Here's my old machine - not loader friendly. Sold it a long time ago.

Appreciate all of the comments!!!!

Good thread Shawn. Seems to support my thoughts of a MMM for a small, level property. I see my son with his 6' 3 point mower having to dance around obstacles. However, he has 10 acres to mow - that's the right tool for him.

Depending on your future plans, or possibilities ... A Backhoe (BH) is a very handy tool, even on a tiny tractor ...

Obviously can dug a burial hole, but also pick up a leprosy carrying dead critter!

The Massey Ferguson GC line, at least mine and newer you have to get the BH subframe with it from the factory ... It has its own model number ... Other manufacturers you can "add it on later" ...

Sorry to be late to the game here but I agree with most of what has been said. So I was pretty much in your shoes and found a 1998 John Deere 4100, a 20 hp tractor with a 410 loader and 54ā€ belly mower with about 750 hours at a kubota dealer for about $7500. It is really a completely rebadged Yanmar. They are available geared or hydrostatic. My gut is try to find a hydro. I stumbled on a great deal as it was the wrong color for the dealer but there are tons of them on tractorhouse and they have a good rep for being reliable and solid. Ideally one with turf tires would be best. Can’t recommend that setup any stronger and I have been very happy with it.

I have been looking at 4110s!

As far as a backhoe goes, nice to have. Sure I’d get a lot of noise from the wife. I have had more than my share of toys and I think that patience is fading!

You guys do like to spend my money!!!!.

My opinion:
I dislike mid mount mowers, Hard to remove and install, may require the three point hitch to raise and lower so hitch is not useable when mower is installed, limited lift tracor may get hung up on a high spot, dirt swailes up around the operator, hard to service blades, hard to clear an object "stuck" under mower.
A rear mount mower solves most of the issues plus can back over ditches and under trees and some fences. The disadvantage is it ties up the hitch.
