Need advice on hireing ALien

At work we had a guy come in to fill out an application.

Speaks -some- english.. not alot. Brought in his ss card and alien ID card... No DL.. he rdes a bike.

I thought he might be a good worker.. untill I say the info on the id card.. says his data of birth was in 1947.. Well.. uh.. this guy might be in his 30's.. maybee 40's if he has had a hard life.. no way on earth he is 60...

I called our worc comp Insurance agent for advice.. no help there.

I called dept of labor.. no help. Called US citizenship and Img svcs, couldn't even get a human to talk to... Was referred to ICE.goc website.. found no help there...

I need some advice.

If I am not mistaken, you will need more than one form of identification to hire him and have the govt take taxes from him. The federal paperwork (I don't recall the form #) requires at least two valid forms of ID. A SS card is not accepted. His Alien ID card (formerly a green card) is acceptable IF he has another form of ID. Alien ID cards and fake SS cards are a dime a dozen. My wife had her Alien ID card stolen in Florida several years ago and I am sure someone now has it with a different picture. Ask to see his passport as a second form of ID.

If you believe he has forged or stolen documents please notify the authorities as outlined above.

According to the I-9 employment eligibility verification form, you need 1 document from list A, or a document from List B and a document from list C. The SS card is in list C.. the Alien ID card is in list A.. thus his single 'list A' document meets the Form I-9 requirement.

Still.. My gut tells me there is something wrong... the guy can't be 60... His card does not look tampered with.. hwever.. i get the feeling that with a good color printer, scanner, and a laminator setup from office depot, i could be making these documents by the dozen tonight at home, if you get my drift...

The agravating thing is that I'm having trouble getting a gov' agency to even blink and help me with this situation.... ARGH!!

Yea, it has been awhile since I had to deal with an I-9.

Alien ID cards are no better than a drivers license. They can be forged very easily. I am surprised the INS doesn't have an easy way to verify their validity. A year or so ago we were informed that there would be a new tamper proof ID card available but I have heard nothing since.

I say we go back to making them register each January at the post office. But then again, if we got rid of all the illegals, the Dems would have nobody who could vote for them.

For some reason the government does not care. It is wrong that these people are here illegally. Under no circumstances hire him. Report him is all that you can do. Call the INS and you have done your part.

I agree completely. There are laws to follow and those that do deserve the opportunities for gainful employment. I'm glad you are questioning what appears to be wrong. The person will lose nothing if they are following the law. Those that disagree with the way the laws are set up need to work for a change within our system.

Thanks for the info guys.. I'm still pursueing this.. however none of the gov. agencies seems to be interested in persuing this!! it looks like I'd get farther with my "alien" problem by asking Sigourney Weaver than the INS...
