Need advice on my 6.0 please

Seems I hear that the most wear on an engine occurs at start up. True or not I don't know.:)

The OP would be better off attaching a battery minder. Lot less hassle.

For my truck I get the Wife to hook up a Battery charger every six months or so.

"keeping the bats up" : Well, the Bat's in the Belfry may be up but their Heads are down!:D

i think its obvious to anyone with a 70+ IQ.. that the 'run it occasionally' comments are geared at keeping the bats up, not anything with the engine.
That and the tires. I let my Tacoma (sold) sit for about 6 months, stupidly, and it ruined the tires. $600 mistake.

Yeah, if you park the truck for an extended period, up the tire pressure to (at least) the maximum...
I'd store my old 911S over the winter...always pumped the tires to 45-50 PSI.

Hey guys I will say this a 6.0 has a multi variable turbo, which means at different rpm the change to produce more or less boost. I have heard threw a few different guys that the type of metal that the impellers are made out of corrode after they sit for a while and make it so the next time you pour the coals to it you will have even worse turbo lag and also less boost. I also do not know whether this just corollated to climate and for way excessive time sitting?????? Other than that I would let it sit that way you don't have to worry about your buddy wrapping it around a tree. Lol get feeling better. Nic

It is actually called a "variable geometry turbo" and I really don't think that the vanes sticking is a common problem, certainly not corroding. I bet if you googled for that, the only web sites you would read about it would be performance parts / modders who want you to buy some kind of upgraded turbo. Just my $0.02 but soot in the turbo is the last thing I would be worried about.

Ya that sounds about right, I had just heard that from a few guys that we know that had to get there turbos replaced after sitting for extended period of time. I would call it bull also other than ford covered it twice on the one guys truck because the first time it had 15k on it and 38k the second time. But here again the truck is a 05 or 06 and it has like 40k on it so you can tell how long in between it sits. So anyhow just adding my two cents, could be wrong, might be right? But just throwing it out there. Nic

hmm.. a new one i havn't heard about. I'd be inclined to think, if it is happening at all, that it's statistically insignificant, or a fluke. can't find anything about it on the internet so far.. except here.. :)

The variable vane turbos like used on the Ford 6.0L and later motors and also on the later model Dmax motors is a nice piece. No waste gate and simple but if not ran hard they will soot up.

The only issues I have heard of is with guys who baby them. Run them like they are meant to be ran and you will have no issues with them. That and decent fuel.

Does that mean older slower folks like me who are in no rush to get to where they are going should steer clear of vehicles with this type of Turbo:)?

Probably so. No really, my guy who does body work and fiberglass work for us has a 6.0L. He works it hard like I do mine. His dad bought one and putted around town putting maybe 4,000 miles a year on it. It ran like crap. His son hitched up a 14K BP car hauler and took it out on the highway to Indy and back and "blew it out". Now runs like a top but about once a year he has to go work the crap out of it to clean it up.
