Tractor
Sears SS16
Hello,
I'm new to this forum. I currently own a 1973 Sears SS16 tractor with 3 attachments: a Snow plow, A garden plow and a mowing deck. I have not gotten it to run as of yet. I see these online at Youtube and they are serious little workhorses. I am guessing, but think it would take under $500 to get this little gem running well, including any parts. It currently is missing the headlight assembly. ($224.99 plus shipping on ebay)

My second choice is a person in my area selling a John Deere 1848 Model M tractor. It runs well, per his ad and has good tires.
He is asking $3200.00. I would offer less.

Is it better to put out 500 for a smaller tractor and have it running, or splurge and get an even older John Deere tractor, which is running already.

I'm leaning toward the Sears Ss16 because my lot is only 1/2 acre and this would suffice. Also, I would have somewhere to store the SS16, but the JD would be stored out in the elements.

Since many of you are expert Tractor users, I'm open to all information you want to toss my way. Thanks in advance for your advice!
Sherrie

Just a thought? Since you already have those attachments, have you considered looking for another lawn tractor that they would fit at a lower price than the JD is listed for. You should be able to find a real decent and dependable mower at a lesser price. You stated that the Sears model was made in 1973. Parts might be difficult to purchase since it is almost 40 years old. There is a Lawn and Garden forum here on TBN, that you may find interesting and informative. If your mind is set in regards to the JD, then most certainly do what you think is best. Would your attachments fit the JD model? If not, then the additional costs of attachments will enter the arena. It is a Vintage Tractor. Best wishes and Welcome aboard. Try this website to find the specs on the JD model. Put your Money into the Sears tractor and if you get that going you can due what you need and have the extra$$ to save up and get something better next year or the year after and you have your Sears tractor as trade bait.

just my thoughts.
