Hi, we are remodeling our kitchen and I need to move the exhaust fan over the range (which is through an outside wall) by 7.5" to the right. Issue is, it will be right in the middle of a 2x6 stud (it's currently against that stud), so I'll need to cut it. Studs are 24" apart. Exhaust fan opening is the standard 3.25"x10". Over that wall, it's the attic, there is no second floor there. Do I need to frame the opening like I would for a window (header, trimmers and sill) or is this an overkill for a 21" opening?

How would you move this exhaust duct?

Thanks.

Not quite sure I picture things correctly but you never wanna just cut out part of a stud on an outside wall (or a load bearing wall in the house). Especially on a 24" spacing. You would need to frame it in with a header to support the load.

If I was you, I'd figure out a way to move it another few inches to clear the stud.

I was able to adjust the filers between the cabinets to move the exhaust past the stud so I won't need to cut it. Thanks for your advice,

I completely reworked my exhaust fan over my cooktop so it still draws fumes upward, but then turns 90* downward and draws everything down into a suction fan in the basement and blows it outside. Gets rid of a lot of the noise.

Remote fans are great. The last kitchen remodel I did, I put the fan in the garage attic, so it was very quiet. In my bathrooms, I have remote fans in the attic and you can hardly hear them. I have them on timers or they would be accidentally running all the time.

I have a range hood that filters the air and exhausts back inside. You'd think it would not work well but it does an exceptional job. Not sure you can even get them any more. It is a Kenmore and a it was produced for Sears. I put this in because it is extremely windy here and the hole in the house was making that entire side of the house cold in the winter. Not sure what I'm going to do when I need new filters now that Sears is pretty much defunct. This got me thinking about it and I went looking for filters and not having much luck.

That would defeat the secondary purpose of the bathroom fan in my house.. :D
