Thanks everyone for their advice. I tried an experiment. I called the Kubota dealer to ask the cost of a 50 hour service on a basic L series tractor. He said $495. I called JD, they said $600. I called the New Holland dealer and he said "what's a Mahindra but it would be $75 an hour plus parts, takes about 4 hours at least thats what they get for a New Holland...so now I feel like I just live in the wrong part of the country and my dealer is normal for the area. What do you think. I did get the name and number of the local rep if I need it and another Mahindra dealer who said it was a territory thing but if I had problems he would help out. Should I go for it?

What is involved with a 50 hour service? Changing fluids and filters? If so, I suggest you learn how to do that yourself. I am also a female and new tractor owner but most of my neighbors know how to work on tractors. So I had a neighbor show me how to do all of that so I will be able to do it myself from now on. $500 seems like a lot of money. Does the service need to be done by the dealer because of the warranty?

a lot of dealers include the first service for free,maybe a differant dealer or brand is in order

I am sort of sounding like a dumb blond. It was really a question of could I trust this dealer. I am leaning towards
he is as good as any of ther others in this area. When I buy a car I sort of go in and say give me the brown one. I check safety and mileage and thats about it. I don't expect to hve a relationship with the dealer. Having spent months researching and reading if I learned nothing else it is to have a dealer you trust. So I think this guy is ok, the tractor price seems reasonable or better than other dealers so I may go for it this week. Neighborliness in New England sometimes means nodding when you pass. Not that people won't help you
but everyone is independent--like you'd rather shoot yourself than ask. Its hard to explain ... but the guy who cuts my hay says he will teach me or do it himself. I talked to another neighbor who was driving by on his JD and he volunteered to teach me what I need to know. This may be a whole new world. Again thank to everyone for their help.

Nice neighbors. Take them up on their offers. You will learn more about things you had no intention about learning about. Conversations will drift into other areas. How do they service their machines, oil they use, dealers they like, etc.
