I use a infrared thermometer and see which side starts getting hot/warm first.
I do this when figuring out transmission cooler in/outs.
That might help figure out which is the output port of the pump/transaxle but it is no help on the other end of the hose -- figuring out which is the input side of the steering valve.
He had the moxy to pull it apart so he will eventually tell us how he got it back together, whether he marked the connectors, etc.
