Eddie - Thanks for that info. I had heard you could use a pressure washer to remove any peeling paint before you started painting. Now that doesn't sound like a very good idea. I guess I will be scraping and brushing it unless you know a better way.

BB,

Like I mentioned, that information was on an episode of This Old House. I've never tried to preasure wash a house with wood siding or vinyl, just brick. But that's a different thing all together. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I'm sure there are allot of things to consider with it, and they were in New England. Not sure what the diffeences would be compared to Texas.

In the show, they had a sander that was a cross between an orbital sander with a disk that went in a cirlc, but looked more like a power hand planer to me. They used it for sanding the wood before painting.

( I built my home seven years ago and haven’t cleaned it yet. The vinyl is starting to look pretty dirty and the white flashing even worse. There’s quite a bit of vinyl to do … the home has a 42 x 60 footprint, two story with a 40 x 24 attached garage. I have a standard gas pressure washer 2450 psi with a siphoning wand. I never thought that siphoning detergent worked worth a bean. I was going to hit it with the pressure washer, brush with a diluted bleach solution (I love bleach it’s my cure-all!) and pressure wash again. Also have to wash the composite deck which is looking pretty dirty, Any bits of advise that could save me time, expense or head ache would be appreciated … Scozz )

I pressure washed an old barn. Did it at a 45 degree angle, very hot August day, and then let it sit for days before I primed. I had to make sure I did not peel the wood off, as the pressure washer really can tear the wood off, sort of like taking a planer to a piece of wood. I knocked 30 years of dirt off, the old peeling paint and got totally soaked in the process. Great on a nice hot (90 degree) day. I wore hearing protection, eye protection and long pants and old army boots.

The spray can rip your skin off.

The key was to make sure the wood dried for days. Two years later, after one coat of primer and 2 coats of barn red, it looks great! Some day I will spray it again (just to remove the dirt) and put one more coat of barn red paint on it. But for now, the wood has a nice protective coat of paint. Will last another 20 years!!!!!!!!!
