Thats why an old Model 65 would be a good buy, for around $300 or so.

The double action allows for a hair trigger when target practicing, or lining up on a kill shot. The only time I use single action is when just goofing off, but if there was an intruder, it would be a nice option. I also like that it's totally safe with the hammer down and loaded, but able to fire by just pulling the trigger. Something you can't do with an auto.

Eddie, don't you have SA and DA reversed?


Don't forget the Glock when it comes to the autos.

Any of brands that you have suggested would be a good choice. For the way you are wanting to store the pistol stainless steel is an obvious choice. Some revolvers are DA only. My wife has arthritis and can't do DA only revolvers but she can shoot SA revolvers. She can handle the recoil of a .38 Special or 9mm but not the recoil of a .357 Magnum. Shotguns are certainly a lot more gun if you have the time to shoulder, swing, and point them. For SD a pistol with night sights seems to be the best choice for us. Even though we do have several shotguns that are available for us to use.

I have a book somewhere that says if you are not regularly shooting at the range, I think monthly minimum, then you are not prepared. MotorSeven was suggesting the same thing.

I don't know how many women at work have guns stashed in their car, not in a safe, but enough. I know two women that have had guns stolen from either their car or house because the guns were not in a safe when they were not at home or in their car. Another women opened up her console between the seats and flashed her unsecured gun. I wonder how good of aim these women have.

At our house our first line of defense is fence. Not much of a deterrent but it keeps the dogs in which is the second line of defense. But we don't have any killer dogs, one is getting cataracts and is hard of hearing so he is not the best watch dog. Another one would pee in fear. One more that has good eyes and ears, is alert but not big or intimidating. We do not discuss the third line of defense but I hope my cell signal works out in the country. It is a bit spotty at times.

I do hope your third line of defense is a firearm of some sort. Cell phones are not a line of defense...they won't stop an intruder. The best thing a cell phone is for is dialing 911...then you're dependent on response time. Even a quick response (less then 10 minutes in the country) can be an eternity and a bad guy (or guys) can do a lot of harm in those few minutes.
You've got to depend on yourself...and not just as a country dweller.
