Is there a question here?

This whole thread is an ongoing question, but if you need something more specific, I suppose "Is ordering and installing the missing thermostat parts from Hoye the logical next step, or is there something amiss with the radiator pressure that needs to be addressed first?" would be where I'm at this morning.

A tstat is totally unnecessary. Fill the radiator with water, pressurize and see where the water is going. Back-flush the system.

Do you mean by running the engine? That's the only time it has any pressure. Or will filling it up allow me to pressurize it with the test kit?

Okay, I'll head back over there tomorrow and put the gauge on it again, see what I can suss out.

In the meantime, I'm a little fuzzy on the whole "a tstat is unnecessary" comment. Doesn't the thermostat serve some kind of purpose? Or rather, what purpose, exactly, does the thermostat serve? What am I missing (damaging / destroying / neglecting / etc.) by not having one installed as shown in the drawing?

Thermostats control engine temperature. They open at a certain setting allowing coolant to circulate. (160F on these Yanmars) They open only enough to maintain that setting. If one is not installed your engine could run a little to cool in cold weather but hot weather no problem. Personally if the model came with one I would want one installed but I'm sure many run without them.

Get the missing parts and the overheating should be fixed... I raced round track cars for years... Yes..Thermostats control engine temperature. But it also controls the speed that the water travels through the engine... If it goes through the engine to fast it can’t pick up the heat as well... If it does not stay in the radiator long enough it can't get the heat out of the water... Back in the racing days anyone running a car without a thermostat over heated... We would put in a restrictor about a 1 inch hole in place of a thermostat...It was a big washer a flat thin piece of sheet metal with a 1 inch hole in it or we would take out the center of the thermostat… This was used to slow the water speed down to give the radiator time to cool the water and give the water in the block and heads time to absorb the heat into the water... Think about it if a tractor would run at the right temperature without the thermostat and gasket or o-ring… Don’t you think the tractor manufactures would just leave them out and save millions of dollars in parts they have to install…

I ordered the parts yesterday or the day before. Whether they're necessary or not, something in my nature rebels against obviously missing pieces.

The thing should not redline that fast even if it had no cap on it i dont think! something is a miss here. We need to confirm that sensor and gauge are reading the correct temp. And that the radiator is not clogged up next. and any water passages in the head/block (pain in the but)
