Ford 3400
So I just bought a Ford 3400 backhoe and wanted to check all the fluids. When I went to check the rear axel fluid I unbolted what I thought was the fill plug according to the manual but I was wrong, the fill plug was covered in grease. when I took the bolt out I heard what sounded like a washer or nut fall inside. I attached a photo of the bolt I undid that's indicated with a red arrow the fill plug is the white arrow (this was after I realized I goofed and cleaned the fill plug off). What did I undo? Do I have to remove the 3 point cover to fix it or can I reach it through the access cover on the other side. I am new to tractors so please go easy on me lol. Thanks in advance!

Not familiar with your tractor but if you have a easily accessable cover.... take it off.
If whatever that fell is big enough to make noise falling in gear oil It would pay to see what it is.

On the other hand get a parts breakdown and see what it has behind the bolt first.

I would guess the top one is a fill plug and bottom for checking level. I can’t see any reason for a bolt with a nut and washer to be there to screw up.

The previous owner may have stripped the pipe thread and plugged it with bolt and washer using an access panel??

As mentioned a parts breakdown and access cover will help. IF a nut was placed on the inside in theory you should be able to retrieve it.

If this is the case retread the hole for a pipe thread plug.
