There is no way I would pay that outrageous price to John Deere. I would spend days in the shop for an alternative.
They wanted $159. plus shipping for a shaft on my project. I got the job done for $31.00, no shipping. I will add the green paint.

A good hydraulic cylinder repair shop and/or machine shop should be able to repair it. What exactly is broken on it? Can you post pics? Maybe someone here could give some suggestions on the repair of it.

If you can't find a used cylinder I'd just go ahead and buy the new one for $950 from Deere. Sure, it's a huge chunk of change, but now you have a $15-20K tractor that is useless without it.
Sometimes the other brands are worse. The air filter for my little Kubota costs roughly double that of the air filter for our 2550 Deere. I honestly have a much better experience buying parts from Deere than I do Kubota.

Send a message to member wdchyd. I messaged him about repairing a welded hydraulic steering cylinder. He said at the time he could repair my old one for $225. I needed the tractor right then and bought a new one. I have not had mine done because I don't need it right now and don't have an extra $225. He owns a business called Curtis Hydraulics in Hooksett NH. You might be able to google him also to get a phone #.
Here is a photo. The broken rod is black & coming out of the cylinder parallel to it. When I cut off the tie rod link, the rod pulled completely out. I checked w/ a couple of shops that do hydraulic repair work (including the JD dealer) they said they could not do it.
The other option is to adapt another cylinder to do what this one does. This cylinder has the rod go thru both ends of the cylinder to push/pull the tie rods on for both wheels. All the double acting tie rod cylinders that I have seen have the rod come out of one end. So to get this to work, you would need to mount up the cylinder (i.e. fab & machine some mounts), get an idler arm & drag link (plus fab/machine the idler arm mount), etc.
Anything can be done w/ enough effort. However, this effort would be significant. Also, there would be allot of miscellaneous parts to scrounge up (drag link, idler, couple of extra ball joints, etc). By the time you were done you spend more than what your cheaper cylinder cost. As much as I hate doing it, I need my tractor so I can be doing some work with it, not be working on it.

Try looking at Surplus Center, ther steering cylinder page is: Surplus Center and they appear to have 7 of theose cylinders for under $220. They also have an eBay store page for those cylinders, it is: 2x8x1.25 DOUBLE ROD STEERING HYDRAULIC CYLINDER 9-6845 items in Surplus Center store on eBay! where they have 5 double rod steering cylinders that are each less than $220.
