I want to do some fluid changes in the near future. Have some questions. These questions will be for both my 240D and 220D.

How many qts of oil do they take

What weight oil

What kind of hydraulic fluid and how much ( read on another post 4.5 Gal. )

How do you drain the hydraulic

These are my first tractors and I don't have a manual. Thanks for the help and your patience ;)

Not familiar with your specific models. I buy 15W40 diesel rated oil for mine in a 2 1/2 gallon jug. It is enough for more than a couple of changes in my 1500D.

The classic answer for the hydraulic oil question is JD 303 or equivalent. I suspect that the newer types of hydraulic transmission oil are as good, if not better. It is available in 5 gal buckets. You might need two for two tractors.

To drain the fluid look for a drain plug in the bottom of the gearbox. It would be a good idea to clean the filter when changing the oil. Check out Hoye Tractor's website for pictures from the parts list to see where the filter is located.

I believe they are the same 2wd and 4wd the triangle is the filter screen and just below it is the drain bolt. I was just out there so didn't take a sec. I hope they are.

Thanks for the info. I took some pics. On my 240D the pic looks the same as Carey's . How do you clean the screen ? Does the screen act as a filter ? I think I have my 240D figured out. My red 220D , I'm not too sure of. I seen a filter and wasn't sure if it's the filter for the hydraulics. I'll post some pics and if anyone wants to chime in please do ;)

Here's the 220D :

DOES THIS COVER HAVE TO COME OFF TO REMOVE OIL FILTER ? :

IS THIS THE HYDRAULIC FILTER ? :

IS THIS THE BOLT TO DRAIN THE HYDRAULIC ? PIC 1 :

OR IS THIS THE BOLT , JUST BELOW IT ? PIC 2 :

Good thats it on the 240. I thought it was the same. Use JD 303 my notes says 16qts. that sounds about right the best I can remember,15-40 eng.oil 4-5 qts. I used parts cleaner on the old screen and hit it with the air, seemed to work fine kept it anyway. It was in pretty bad shape so I replaced it.Better safe than sorry IMO.
There is a o-ring that was missing on the Org. filter/screen just be careful with it. That was another problem it was missing from the previous owner and tried to just use form a gasket which leaked:rolleyes:. That was the hardest thing to do when I bought it was getting the Dumb_ _ _. out of it. He wasn't big on maintenence. Get by Charlie big time. I had problems with the lift not working but after a filter and Hyd fluid change and went in and cleaned the hyd. valve it's been good ever since. One thing I'll have to say to be true, if you take care of it, it will take care of you:cool:

Just an update. Did oil changes on both. Worked on on my green 240D and changed the hydraulic fluid. The fluid looked like a coffee with cream color. After sitting outside in very cold Minnesota nights I would start the tractor and the FEL would not move.

After changing the fluid the tractor shifts better and everything works great. I thought I'd post a few pics :D

Here is the filter out :

You can see the color of the fluid in this pic :

looks like water had contaminated the fluid. the screen looks brand new again.

Is that much grit normal on the hydraulic filter? I would be really uncomfortable knowing that much stuff was getting into my hydraulic oil. I've never seen a screen pulled out before, but it looks excessive. Someone with more experience than me want to comment?

Yes. Mine was as bad if not worse when I bought it and pulled all the maint. on it. And I don't have a FEL or BH.

The hyd/trans fluid on my 240 was also coffee colored from living outside (previous owner). Finally fot it clean after 3 drain and fills with new fluid. However I didn't remove the filter screen for fear that I woud damage one of those aged O-rings and not be able to readily find replacements. Had no issues with FEL or lift so figured the screen was OK. After a look at those pics I'm having second thoughts about skipping this procedure. I don't see the O-rings listed on Hoye's site for my machine. Are they a standard size? If not where can they be purchased?
