( It's odd they are protected in the US, in Canada people shoot them when in season. )

You can hunt them in the States, too, in season. The problem is that the geese read the hunting regs too, and know when it is open season.

Maybe, if it's goose hunting territory, put up a really obvious fake goose blind with a water pipe sticking out to look like a gun barrel. That should attract game wardens, too.

Since they all originated in canada, can't we invoke some political anti terrorist act to send them all back north ?? They must be here illegally !!!!!! EH ???

Aah....see that's the problem!! They didn't come from Canada. Their great grandparents or earlier maybe...but the ones you're complaining about are about as Canadian as George Bush /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

You're right. The subspecies that usually causes all the problems is the giant Canada, which was transplanted in large urban areas from a founder flock starting a few decades back. They were in real danger of extinction. You all know the rest and now most are a nuisance.

Perigrine falcons have been saved via a similar approach and are now found in some of our largest cities. They nest in the skyscrapers and keep the pigeon population in check. It'll be all right until people's pet cats start disappearing. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I used to live on a lake with the same problem. Like you there was nothing I could do to scare the geese away (they are incredibly smart in some ways).I heard all the old wives tales too! The resident labs would chase them until I was afraid the dogs would have a heart attack. The geese just toyed with the dogs. Quite by accident I saw a special on television regarding this and the expert said you can by a non toxic liquid for your garden sprayer that tastes like grape to the geese (supposedly they detest the taste). This will drive them to another area,BUT they will come back to see if the grass still tatses funny, so you must maintain the spray. I think the man said it lasts weeks. I just searched and can not verify what I am saying is true.

I live 1/2 mile from a nice cemetary. They too have a real goose problem. They strung a wire across the pond there to keep the geese from landing in the water. It breaks up the waves and looks like an object in the water from above. This did wonders to keep the geese out. That is , until stupid people started feeding them again. There are signs posted on both sides of the pond. "Please Do Not Feed the Geese." Unfortunately, it seems that these people never went to school and cannot read. So now the workers chase the geese on golf carts, lawn mowers and even a pickup truck. The grass around the pond is so thick with goose droppings that you cannot miss getting it on your shoes. In Ma. they have a season for residential geese. You can buy bird bombs from most sport shops to use in a 12ga. shotgun. Sellier & Belliot makes them. They explode at about 100 yards or so up in the air. They do work at scaring the daylights out of any type of bird.
