My '95 TAFE 351DI just received a new battery, and that did not solve the non-starting problem, though it comes to life easily if I short across the solenoid with a piece of iron. There is a #10 wire coming out of the harness and sliding onto a wide spade connector on the upper bolt on the solenoid. Another of those wide spade connectors on a different wire with a 30 amp fuse went back onto the right side of the alternator. It is bolted on now. A smaller wire on a small push on connector went onto a recessed spade connector just above the big, hot, 12 v. feed. There is other wire of 16 gauge which comes out of the bottom of the alternator, but I don't know of it being connected to anything in the 14 years I have owned it.

The problem is another wire peaking out of the harness, a yellow one about 14 gauge with a push on connector which I believe is supposed to go onto the solenoid, but I can't find a place to plug it in. I suspect it is the one which actuates the starter.

During the burnt fingers phase earlier in the day I had my wife turn on the starter while I held the yellow wire to the bottom pole. The starter turned smoothly and quietly without the gear engaging. So I moved the wire up but then nothing happened.

I had neglected to post a photo of the solenoid with the broad spade protruding from beneath the top nut. There was indeed the scar of another spade on the other side of the nut. I cobbled together one like it and tried it. No success.

So I shorted the starter and it lit the engine up, but it would only idle roughly and would not respond to the throttle. It shut off normally when asked, though.

I then quit repairing the tractor while there was still some of it left. It is sitting in the middle of the shop, though, so I need to get it running.

The black wire inn the photo is too short to fit anything. What's more, the recess in the alternator above it has no spade connector installed within it.

Google told me that the fuel starvation was likely because of a lack of air in the tank, so I removed the cap on the tank and that problem resolved itself. It still won't self-start or charge, though. I removed it from the car-charging station in the shop and shall await developments.
