Hello all,

Thought I would try this. I have a 169 CC that was made in 74'. It is hydro and has the kohler 16 hp motor. It is in pretty good shape. It needs paint and a few things that I have already procured. I put a new muffler on it and all that jazz. I have had it for two years and have really not had time to play with it much. However, here recently I have been wondering should I try to restore it or sell it.

I have had no success with getting it to mow as the previous owner neglected the deck (42") and I can not figure out how to get it on the mower. Furthermore the spindles are rusted and I can not get the blades off! Overall the deck is in very good shape, very little rust and so forth.

I understand they did not make this mower very long and I can not even find a place that has a manual for it. So, all that being said, I need some help. Thanks in advance and sorry so long winded.

Joe

I would try some Liquid Wrench on the spindle nuts to get the blades off. You can try greasing the spindles (they should have zerk fittings) and maybe spraying some oil or WD-40 into them to free them up. Worst case you can buy new replacement spindles that now have tapered roller bearings.

You've got a keeper, but if you live between Maine and Connecticut you could sell it to me. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif If you come back, I'll tell you of a website to go to where you can find all kinds of info.

Yes, I am back...

I have tried break free, break fluid, wd 40 and nothing loosens them. The blades spin, I just can't get them off to replace them. I will probably have to buy new spindles after I end up burning them to try and get them off.

What can you all tell me about this tractor? I live in GA. I might as well tell you all that I got it for free. A guy I did some work for on his house gave it to me as a bonus. He had two of them and said he liked his electric one better than the hydro. He bought the hydro for his dad who never used it for anything except tilling his small garden and cutting his small yard.

A web site would be great. How much are new spindles? Where can I find a manual for this sucker so I can figure out how to put the deck on right? It does have the hydro lift on the back and front also.

Thanks,
Joe

You live in GA hey...well lets see if we can solve your problems for you!

First of all I have break downs of all the parts for that mower, including the deck. Manuals might be a stretch but parts break down and parts aren't a problem. So what all do you want...just pm me and we will see what we can do for you.

Your local dealer will have the same info. we do, but Ill help anyway I can.

Serious I-H cub Cadet site.
Also, I've had good luck getting manuals from Jensales.
An eBay search for Cub Cadet 169 will turn up something.
Can you try an air or electric impact wrench on those blade nuts?
Good luck!

O.k. I am going to try the impact wrench this week and see if it works. I did find on e-bay a ton of stuff. Why I did not think to look there first I don't know. A guy on there has manuals and everything. So I will see what I can find. Any other tips?

Thanks,
Joe

I have been restoring my 169 cub cadet that I have had for over 30 years. It sounds like yours is identical to mine. I have the orginal manuals for it. I believe I can help you with all your possible problems.

First off, the problem with the mower deck spindles! Let me ask a question, Are you holding the upper pulley for a particular spindel you are working on so that it does not turn?

Please do not get affended, I'm just asking. If not you do need to retain this so that it can not turn. If you are doing so, (making sure pulley is retained) Than an excellent way to help loosen the nut from the rusted shaft is to take two 1 lb. hammers and by holding one against the side of the nut (be careful not to hit the threads on the spindle) then take the other hammer and tap the opposite side of the nut just hard enough to create vibration. Do that to all sides of the nut, besire to change position of both hammers when performing this function. The vibration should loosen the nut from the shaft and allow the pentrents you are using to get down between the nut and shaft. Try to strike each side of the nut with the same amount effort, this will ensure that you do not egg shape the nut. But give this a try and let me know your results. I have used this process with a lot of success.
