Need help with Water well.

Right now I need to find where the water stands in the well. I used contractors string to find the depth of the well. the line snags on the casing, I think I'll wax the string, with a candle, it should help.

With a "heavy enough" weight on the string, it shouldn't snag. Try tying something like a plumb bob or similar item to the string. If that isn't enough weight, increase it with something longer / heavier.

Once you find the depth, you could make a test pump up using garden hose (you'll need a few of them to get down the 300 feet) with a small pump (like a pool cover pump). Get a flow regulator for the other side to control the output (which will also limit the input) and see how long you can pump 5GPM for before it goes dry.

i had a well drilled years ago that was 625 feet feet deep.it was drilled in Sept and i was told we didn't have a large vein.the next spring on a bright and sunny morning i took the cover off the casing and took a mirror and reflected down the casing and i could see water so i went and got some contractors string and a big nut and lowered it to the water.i then measured it and it was 25 foot from the top,so i had 600 foot of water in the casing.i forgot to mention after they got through drilling they put 14 sticks of dynamite and lowered it and touched it off the water went higher than the drilling rig.i would try the mirror thing and see if you can see the water level.

Greetings, The guy up the hill says he gets 5gpm. He has a storage tank and a low water shut off, it fills the tank as the water comes in. I'm supprised how little they know about there wells. The guy down the road has 100gpm.

This well is said to get 10gpm.

I bought a toilet tank ball, I plan to use this as the float on the end of contractor string to find the exact water level, it should keep the string away from the wall a bit. I'm guessing the casing isn't stright.

OK, We had the pump installed. Pump is at 298' couldn't go any deeper somthing in the well. Pump is standing in 18' of water. Installed a 5gpm restictor, and it draws down almost 5'. I'm going to put a pump saver, and take the restrictor out, We'll pick it up tomorrow. I'll get back as we have time to play with the well.
I have a low pressure switch on it now, kicks off at 30lbs.

Greetings, We added a pump saver, if the pump out runs the the well [low water] the pump kicks off, than kicks on again after the time I set it for. The water tastes like iron, thinking of pouring in a couple gallons of bleach, I have read of doing this and recurculating the water for an hour or more than letting it sit over night.

Hi Valley,

Glad you got that pump saver installed - saves a lot of manual restarts!

I doubt the chlorine will reduce the iron - but if you do the chlorine it is suggested to pour it in the well and then run all your spigots in the house for 4-5 minutes (or unitl you smell chlorine at each point) to circulate the chlorine thru the house.

Based on the low amount of water in the well a gallon should be plenty of chlorine.

For iron taste, an iron filter with resin is probably the best, but you can try basic cartridge filters to start. One option is just filtering drinking water.

I only put about a quart when I do it. It is pretty strong. It will also take a week or two to get finally out of your system. It is a good idea but I don't think it will take the iron taste out. You will need a filtering system for that. There are several on the market, make sure you look for one that will remove that iron taste out.

You didn't use any old piping did you? Was it all new pipes and pump?
