You may be right, I may have to remove the clutch to get the socket into the flywheel. That is why I was at least hopeing that one of the guys that have worked on the 1700 and would know, would tell me the tricks of it and how to go about it. If the clutch isn't worn I wouldn't replace it, but one can't know that, till they see it. It sure is working good, so it may be OK.

Dick, since you will have to order a seal anyway, I would go ahead and order/replace the throwout and pilot bearings. Unlike the clutch parts, you can't tell at a glance whether they will become noisy on the next revolution, in 1 hour, or ten years.

You are right Normde, I have had the throw out go on cars that the clutch was good on. Well I can't say went out, but they made so much noise I replaced them. And the tools I find on Northern and Harbor F. don't have that large of sockets in mm. All they have is the American sizes. And the man said it was either 36 or 37 mm, that he wasnt' sure which. I may have to call him back if I can't find out on here what size it is. His email doesn't work anymore, so can't email and find out.

"Thanks to our Chinese neighbors, who know the real price of tools, you can purchase a 3/4" breaker bar, and large size sockets for almost nothing at Northern tool, Harbor Freight, etc. Not pro quality, but good enough for our uses."

Norm,

A while back I had a requirement for a 50mm socket. Standard sockets were close, but not close enough. Went to several tool stores locally, and to order one was $65.00. After ordering and waiting three weeks I got on the web and found Max Tools (url below) that had a 17 piece 3/4 drive metric set that went I think from 17 to 50mm with extensions, pull handle and ratchet for 35.00. By the time I paid freight, it was about 65. Like you said, good enough for most of our use.

Dick,
my parts book shows the same part# for the nut you are talking about for multiple engines (2TR16, 17, 19, 20, 20C).
124450-21530 sadly, it does not state it's size. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

But, I figure, maybe someone with one of those engines that knows the size might see this and be able to help you out.

Good luck,
Jake

I have never taken the flywheel off without taking out the pressure plate so I can’t say for a fact that you can do it. I do know that an impact gun will spin the nut off before the crank has the inclination to spin. If you don’t have one rent one and rent the socket with it.

That sounds OK Buck, but I still don't know the size of the nut, so I can go rent a deep well socket for it. I hope someone on here can tell me. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I have seen three different sizes on the same engine. Pull it apart then you will know for sure. This is not a job that you can do in a day anyway.

I'm not trying to state the obvious...but you could measure the nut once you get it apart. Most any 12" desk ruler these days has a metric rule opposite the standard inch rule. Just my immediate reaction....good luck and enjoy your project.

Well, MichiganBilly, that all sounds good, but the story I got from one dealer is that it needs a deep well socket. That would tell me in is inset, and then it gets a little hard to get a good measurement. But I may have to do some thing when I get into it. It is just that when I start on it, I would like to go on and not have to wait on this or that to go on. If I can have the right tool, it will keep me from having to go 10 miles into town to find it. That is why I'm trying to find out before I start.
