Need ideas for hearth floor

on the wood stove we jsut put in, we had custom made a single piece of (not sure the name of it but I can get it for you) marble resign. they make bathtubs and sinks out of it. it's black and the guy who did it put the white lines in it to make it look like real marble, and it is only about 1 inch thick

The top of our hearth is Ubba Tubba, I think I have the spelling correct, granite. The granite is black the hearth is the same brick on the exterior of the house. We like it.

Granite comes in all sorts of colors and can be cut to shape.

Another option would be soap stone.

I have seen flat products made for hearths. Very thin stuff.

You could put down cement board and then attach ceramic tile, granite tile, marble tile, thin brick, etc. Gives you lots of options of matching the wall.

When I installed an old coal burning pot belly a few years ago, we used a piece of marble from an old restroom stall. was about 4' by 4' and 1&1/4 thick. Worked well. cut with a diamond blade in an old circle saw slowly. Could move into place with a 2 wheeler, and a friend. At that time the marble was a give away from a tear down. I would think you could still find something you would like, reasonable. Part of a cut off from another job at a counter supply store.

I used a piece of Sandstone that i bought from a chap who cuts it with a diamond saw . This piece cost $120 , it's 2" thick and looks right at home in my old humpy .

they make slate tiles that are pretty reasonable in price. Only about 1" think, on top of a piece of durarock, with some thinset and you're under 2"

How about acid staining concrete? You could stain it the color of the stones.
