If you mean a '420' - it was the big brother of the 'famous' 316s, 318's, etc.,. and was a great tractor. Heavy frame and axles for a garden tractor, 2 range hydro, locking differential (foot pedal), split rear brakes, power steering, 20 hp Onan air-cooled engine with a lot of torque. A 1987 should have the later electronic ignition P220 engine. 26x12 rear tires, 18x8 fronts. 3 circuit hydraulics (deck/optional rear 3-point and two independent front circuits for a blade or snow blower, etc.,. The thing is basically the size of an X-series but if anything heavier built.

1000 hours can be about the end or hardly broken in - a lot depends on how well that Onan was treated.

Around here one with the 60" deck that was honestly in good shape with 1000 hours on the clock would probably fetch north of $4K.

Thanks...

Yeah... model 420 makes sense...

I called the ad... $3,800 tractor & 60" mower... 200 hours on new Onan gas engine...

$4,400 with ~48" snowblower & hydraulic angling snowplow blade...

Rear PTO but no 3-PT-hitch...

Re: Need Info. \'87 Deere 4420 Garden Tractor...

Not sure how prices run up your way but around here that would be a pretty decent deal - especially with (if you can confirm it) an almost-new Onan.

An extra $600 for the snowblower and blade is fair as well if they're in good shape - especially if that's the two-stage blower. (There's a 47" and a 48", one's a single-stage and one's a two-stage but off the top of my head I forget which is which. CRS syndrom)

The rear PTO is a relatively expensive add if you need it so having it improves the price even more. Be aware it's not (AFAIK) a 540-rpm set up - it's either 2000 RPM (the 'old' Cat. 0 standard) or something in the 800's (pretty much proprietary to Deere I think).

The 3 point parts aren't that hard to find, even NOS, (eBay) but tend to fetch a pretty good buck ($400+). There are a couple of cottage-industry types making repro sets for about $300.

If you get it be sure you get the blower and blade. Those would sell for a lot more separately.

Hi...

Thanks...

Not buying it... seems a decent price... especially with the blower and plow... but too much for me...

Already have a 1980's Gravely garden tractor... 19HP with a 60" deck... it runs/works fine...

Was hoping for a very good deal like I got on the Gravely...

Plus... I really like the older Deere's... /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Re: Need Info. \'87 Deere 4420 Garden Tractor...

Gonna add my two cents worth....according to my 1984 JD L&G tractor catalog, the two-stage blower was a 47 inch and the single-stage blower was a 46 inch.

The 47 inch model was for 318 and 420 models and the smaller 46 inch fit the 316, 318, and 420.

A 2000 rpm rear pto was optional for all 3 models.

Re: Need Info. \'87 Deere 4420 Garden Tractor...

Wasn't there a 49 snowthrower also? The 46 single stage and 47 2 stage use the quick hitch system, but the older 49 mounted direct to the front of the tractor and had it's own lift cylinder. I know it was used on the 300 series, but wasn't sure about the larger 400 series. I believe also that these older blowers fit the 120/140 tractors that go way back. We still have customers that have 140's, another great tractor, ahead of it's time!
