Need Info on Building an Outdoor Fireplace

Egon, with that said wouldn't it be easier to use a metal insert for the firebox? Seems like weding one up out of heavy plate would be rather easy ... Scozz

Plain bricks spall away fairly soon. I used them sideways in 4 places to hold the grills in the fireplace I made in Baton Rouge. They kinda fell apart by the end of about 5 years.

The fire bricks held up for around 18 years in the fireplace made out of field stone with firebrick in the chimney and fire pit area, similar to what we put out back in the pics I posted. They were still good when I sold the house in 1990 and moved to Singapore.

Here are a couple of pics of the NJ fireplace made out of fieldstone with fire bricks in the chimney and fire log area. A couple pics rolled into one:

Top is FIL and wife doing the foundation. Not sure what contribution wife was making. She is a terrific digger.

Bottom is completed fireplace behind and to the right.
