First off, I need to correct something I said - the Cat II hitch is OPTIONAL on the Bush Hog Medium Duty Cutters. It comes standard with a Cat I hitch. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Per the Bush Hog web site - you need 30 PTO HP to run the 5 footer (Model 285). The 6 footer (Model 286) requires 40 PTO HP.

At the top of the page on the rbx it says up to 40 hp at the bottom it says a max. of 40hp but not min. The way it reads leads you to believe that anything up to 40 hp will do. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

This is my big gripe with the HP ratings. The box blades are not powered by the PTO, therefore the HP ratings have to be for the tractor - not the PTO. I don't have an issue with the box blade ratings, but then they go and use the same terminology for the cutters and they're talking about two different things. The cutter ratings are PTO, not tractor. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

As I understand it, the maximum HP ratings indicate the level at which a tractor could tear up the box blade. Imagine a small light duty box blade on a big 100 HP ag tractor. The box blade wouldn't last 15 minutes before the tractor tore it up. So the implement is listed with a maximum HP rating. By the way, if this is wrong somebody tell me quick.

Seems the more I learn the less I know.

...you think 30.5 hp would be alright for the med duty? ...

Hi Eric,

You just so happen to be at the "bottom" of the range... more PTO hp is always better, but I certainly would Not consider a 6' MD rotary cutter for your tractor...

Bush Hog also has another 5' MD cutter, I believe the series 12, which is built like a tank (the deck is virtually indestructible!)

The bottom line is you have to decide how serious brush cutting will be... the Bush Hog 285 and series 12 will do serious damage control for many years over any "standard" duty 5 or 6' units (like the Squealer "overpriced" series)

If you have a CAT I hitch you can use a number of CAT II implements just slip in the bushing. The problem would be a CAT II implement that already has pins on it. The pins would be to big to fit your CAT I 3pt arms.

Now if your hitch is CAT II you should be able use most any CAT I or CAT II implement. Somebody needs to double check me on this since I only have limited experiance.
