Mike,

Broken up concrete would work just fine. The idea is to direct the water flow and to have large durable material there that will wear slowly and not wash away.

I got a callfrom the county engineer today. he called to tell me that he drove by the proerty to look at the entrance of where the drive will be. He had me go ahead and put in the application for the drive so they could size the entrance culvert. At the office he told me that he would want 30ft long because of the road being a narrow country road. when he called he said that since it was at the peak of a hill, and the fact that it appeared to him that it had been used as an entrance to the land in the recent past no cuvert would be needed at the road. he said no water would ever flow up hill. I didn't point out that the only reason it looked like it was a used entrance is because that is the way I have been going into the land for the last 12 months. not sure if it would even have mattered, it still is at the highest elevation. A buddy of mine was forced to put in a 40ft in at his land because it was on a state rt, and he was also told that water would never go through his cuvert, but had to follow st rt guidlines.
haven't gotten with the contractor yet, but figured I would update with what I had so far. The contractor did say he would check around at other places and see if he could get the big culvert at a contractor discount.

I talked to the contractor yesterday. he thinks the 10 ft will stick up too high on the low side. He suggested many things including using old semi trailer, concrete and rebar, and two smaller culverts. He does not know how to actually build the first two, and he suggested that we use two smaller cuverts.
he was thinking about two four foot. I said that that I do not believe they would hold enough flow. I think that we may be able two use two 6ft or 7ft diameter culverts, but my concern is that what extra precautions do you have to install to insure that the material does nt wash out in between the two pipes, I do not want to consistantly be repairing it. It seems that if the water is roaring through the creek that a tremendous amount of force would be placed on the material in the center. He talked to the county engineer also and he said he would drive out and then look at topo maps to see if he could suggest a suitable alternative to one single pipe. He quoted me 450 feet of driveway at 8 dollars a foot, cut in 6 inches deep 2inches of number twos and 4 inches of?? I can"t rememer what that was. He was hesitant to put an actual dollar figure on the placement of the culvert. he wants to do that part by the hour 80 doolars for the trachoe, and 65 for the bobcat. he doesn't think it would take more than 3-4 hours for it but not sure. He said if he quotes an exact dollar it would be relitively high so that he would be protected. This way it will probably be alot cheaper. I think that this guy is honest, he will also be my neighbor when I move there. ANy thoughts on anything would be welcomed. I tell everyone I talk to about this great site, and the wealth of knowledge that is available from all of you.

They make culverts in the shape of the letter "D" where the straight side is convex, that side goes down. You would get the volume of a 10 foot pipe from a pipe 8 foot tall. Remember the posts about emergency vehicles needing to go over this!

I just got off of the phone with the rep from Contech. we talked about using a D shaped pipe, which he said was a round pipe that they basicly crush until they get the shape they want. a 10ft would then become 91 inches high X 142 inches wide the price would be 197.00 a ft 10 guage + 50.00 delivery galvanized steel lasting about 50 years. If I went with a 9 ft shaped into a D it would cost 176 a ft. + 50.00 delivery. he said that if we used a two pipe configuration we would need a wall or poured concrete in between the two pipes. they would need to be 3 ft apart he said the amount of fource the water that could fill the two pipes at full capacity could move rocks in the 2 ft diameter range without problem.

He said that if we go with two pipes that it would take 2 -8ft pipes to equal 1 10ft pipe.

I talked to the county Engineer and they said they would strongly suggest not using two pipes. So at this point it looks as though it is between the 9ft or 10ft pipe pushed into a D shape. I was thinking about the suggestion made about the wire baskets that you fill with rocks. I was thinking about that today and came up with a possible variation of that. I was thinking about buying heavy guage hog panels from a farm supply store. take two panels and 9 guage field wire and fill them with rocks. the ends could be cut to match the arch of the pipe. what does anyone think. I was thinking that I could make it 3ft wide and then at the top where it will cross the pipe I could narrow it to say 1 1/2 ft that way I would have a 17 ft wide area for the actual gravel.
thanks Mike
The county Engineers have been extreamly helpful as of late.
