Need mowing tractor, no FEL, no 4WD....

So true! A full FEL bucket is about mandatory for effective BB'ing. Unless all you are doing is dead flat...

As you know, in the 4wd area the kubota seems to have about the best turning radius. Least ways, it was when I was looking 7 years ago. Competition is always catching up.

Now I've cut thousands of acres over the years and never on a tractor have I done it with a FEL. It's mandatory? Wow?!?........when did that law get passed?

It may be nice, but it's certainly not required. Nothing at all against front-end loaders, they are nice but somehow one can manage to cut pastures without one. In fact, I'd not want one hanging around in front of the rig as I'm cutting.

Unless you're running along with the loader at less than 6" above the ground so that it can wrangle the odd fence post or drill bit or meter I don't really see what it is detecting for you.

What he was saying is that having a loaded front bucket adds so much weight to the front of a 4WD tractor that the increase in traction makes boxblades much more effective if traction is an issue. I suppose as he mentions it depends on the amount of slope you have as well as the soil type.

I am assuming that you may have mis-understood my comment, based on your phrase, "I've cut thousands of acres ...". I was talking about using a boxblade and not a rotary cutter. As _RaT_ stated, with a smaller 4wd tractor performing a heavy ground engaging activity in hilly areas, the extra front ballast is benefitial. Obviously, there are other machines both 2wd and 4wd that are large enough that no additional balast is needed. There is also a second benefit when using a box blade in conjunction with an FEL in that a full bucket can be dumped into low spots to reduce the time needed to produce a flat and level area. This is just based on my personal experience with my equipment, your's is probably different. Why not share it with us, rather than make negative comments that don't further the discussion or enhance the learning of those that may read the thread?

@john bud-Settle down, this forum is just for the very talks we have here. I wasn't criticizing, just thinking out loud which is we do.

You are right, though, for some reason I was thinking shredding while writing that post instead of box blade work. Not sure why, maybe I was still thinking about a previous thread. To get thousands of acres on a box-blade would be a heck of a task.

FEL and box blade do go hand-in-hand, no doubt. FEL and shredder? Not always and that's where my post was caught up in.

Ah, screw me......brain flatulence.

I'm not sure why the 'settle down' part was needed.. their posts didn't look inflamatory to me.. ???
