We are the dearest country on the planet and even our 6 cylinder 6354.4 rebuild kits are only $680 and that includes liners . Yours should be heaps cheaper than that . Maybe you should go to an auto supply house to get the Perkins kit , you do'nt need to go to a Massey dealer . Hastings , TRW , Sealed Power etc. would all do kits .

The engine is good of configured with many components. If something fault come in any part it is easy to remove it. Otherwise we will have to repaired all machine or replaced it to remove that particular fault.

I have found kits from $327.00 and up. My local parts guy couldn't get info from the "warehouse" I have not tried NAPA yet that would be my next closest option.
My personality will not allow me to make a quick decision! I need to get all my questions answered so I will feel I have made the best decision. I kinda want to repair the engine myself but work is busy right now and the days are still short. Although I have "built" gas engines in the past it has been 20+ years and I am certain I will have to come up with some tools I don't have any longer.
So I am weighing paying out some $$$ to get a quick turn around or taking the time to do it myself and saving some $$$. I do have an old Jubilee I can pull out of mothballs if needed.

Thanks for the info. I am rebuilding it because of a sudden and large amount of blow by. I am guessing I broke a ring or something. And it is in a MF 231
A perkins diesel engine (on most models) has very thin ring lands, if a person uses ether
the explosion breaks the ring land off the piston, with no fiixed sealing surface the compression goes straight through to the crankcase. The dealer told me this.

It was confirmed by the rebuild, broke ring lands.

I rebuilt the engine and labled it ( DO NOT USE ETHER ) my boss did not pay any attention, used some ether, one month after it was rebuilt. Piston broke again.

This was a 3 cyl perkins, a forklift, massey. I was able to do an in frame, pull the head and pan without splittng the tractor, I believe it had dry liners, two days later and I was done.

I only replaced rod bearings in the in frame, mains might be possible?

If it has low hours on it you could do the same, high hours pull it.

No Ether has been used !!! The MF dealer told me the same thing that ether would be fatal to the Perkins engine. I have a feeling the engine may have gotten dusted and I just did not notice it until the cold weather and hard starting thing.
