ym4220d
the prices are very close to each other so that is not a big part of my decision.

here are my determining factors:

1. i like the size of the 2420d; but we are only talking 5" more in length and 4" more in width to go to the 2610d.

2. the 2420d has a much more modern feel with a full set of gauges including a gas gauge. also, the fenders, shifters and all around tractor feels less antiquated to me.

3. the 2610d has a vteks v3 loader which lifts more with the bigger cylinders, the 2420d has the v2 loader.

4. i actually like the power shift location better on the 2610d as well as not having to lift up or push down on the lever versus the 2420d being on the column and having to lift up or push down to come out of N into D or R.

5. the 2610d has 2 more hp, not sure if that will make a real world difference or not...if it does this is a plus, if not it is a mute point.

my use of this tractor will be tilling the smallish garden, an extensive yard reconstruction the first year or maybe two, to move engines and other car parts around my shop and yard with a pallet fork attachment, to unload and distribute 50lbs bags of grass seed, manure and fertilizer 4-5 times a year around the yard. i would guess the heaviest thing i would want to move on a regular basis would be a cummins 5.9l engine (1200lbs), this would just be from point a to b, not stack them 5' in the air. moving anything else like a boulder or downed tree would be very infrequent to never. i also want to mention all my existing implements are 48" and i only have 2 acres otherwise i would just get the yn4220d! lol

so what is everyones opinion? is one noticeably better for some reason unknown to me? is one more reliable? is one easier to get parts for?

thx!

I don't think the v2 loader will be able to lift anywhere near 1200#. The v3 might, but I'm not sure.

How many hours are on these tractors? Having the V2 and V3 loaders I suspect they are Vietnam reconditioned.

I don't think either V2 or V3 could lift a 1200 lb engine up and out of a truck's engine compartment, if that's what you need.

In my opinion - I like the PowerShift lever on the dash where I can move it without taking that hand off the steering wheel. N to 1 or R doesn't make much difference but shifting between 1-2-3, up or down, while moving is where the dash shift is more convenient. Your right hand is likely to be occupied with the loader or 3-point control at the time you need to shift.

I think after 30 years the simpler, the better. Advanced features are worth the cost to the first owner, in the first few decades. I'm not sure they are as attractive after they have been in use so long that they represent additional points that may need repair. (Analog fuel gauge, etc). I think both tractors are comparable in quality but I prefer simpler for elderly equipment.

4 ft implements on 2 acres? I think I would buy the smaller one for more maneuverability. Aside from lifting the 1200 lb engine I think it will do anything you ask.

And as Norm noted these are likely VN recons. They are often a good buy but check out your tractor carefully looking for mismatched parts, signs of impending trouble, peculiar gear noises, etc. And budget a few hundred $ just in case you need to bring something up to spec. After that it should be everything you expected.

Overall, this is a near-even match. You will be happy with either.

Like norm said... These tractors you are looking at are most likely re conditioned in Vietnam.... My opinion,,,,,Stay clear of these tractors..Inside the engine is like opening a box of chocolats... You have no idea whats inside !!! Buy an original import or a reconditioned tractor reconditioned in the USA !! You won't be sorry later

Yes they are VN tractors. I am being told that they replace the bearings and rings in every tractor they sell. They admired they do take good parts from the salvage pile when necessary, but always from the same model.

This importer keeps an inventory of 200 refurb VN tractors. They are 20 mins from my house and have been in the same place with the same sales manager since 1999...so I will take my chances. I have prob driven him crazy after going up there at least 3 times a week for the last month and he is always happy to spend 1-2 hrs with me over and over even if it was just before closing with only a promise that I was going to buy something eventually.

These two tractors start up cold on the first crank, do not leak anywhere, have all new hoses, overflow tank, radiator, fan and water pumps. They have no blow by or smoke, have perfect and uniform compressions and I have tested the lift capacity of the 3pts by lifting my 42' deck over gooseneck with an 8x6' rack for my atv on the neck. They both lifted it up at idle. Then I would turn the machine off, went to look at their shop and when I came back it was still up in the air. I have driven them both one after another several times on diff days.

Hoye tractor is 1:40 min drive from me so if the importer screwed me, which I doubt he will, I could get the parts and fix it myself.

I didn't plan to lift these motors up and out of a truck but just be able to move them around my shop.

You may be right California, if I go with simple there would be less to fix if something stops working.

If everyone thinks the v2 can't lift this enough to move it around the shop then maybe the 2610d is the only way to go.

I'm just glad I'm getting your feedback!

Got to ask, are you from Frisco, Tx? No advice, but welcome to the forum. :welcome:

Silly me, I read back in your last post and see you are in Texas.

It sounds like lifting 1200# is important, so I'd test that before making a purchase. Water weighs ~8.35#/gallon, so if it can lift ~150 gallons of water, it will lift your engines.

these people must not have been involved in the lawsuit ....I may be wrong ,but I was under the impression that Fredricks was the only dealer that could legally restore and sell yanmar tractors....Most others were put out of business by the Lawsuit
