Need Rotary Cutter advice

20 years ago, when I bought my first tractor, I went with a Light Duty Landpride 6 foot cutter. The tractor is 37hp, and without a loader, the front tires would come off the ground when going up a hill. I added weight to the bumper and solved that problem.

In hind site, I probably should of spent the money on something more heavy duty. I mowed everything I could run over with it, and beat the heck out of it!!!! I've rebuilt just about every part of that mower, and some of it, I've replaced several times. I really like that I can order anything for it online, and have it delivered in a few days.

I still have that mower, but I only use it for mowing grass, and most of the time, it just sits. I bought a bigger tractor and a batwing two years ago to replace it.

If I was buying a 6 foot mower today, I would decide on what to buy based on what I was going to do with it. If you are mowing grass, weeds and small saplings, then the Countryline is probably the best choice. I've never used one, or know of anybody that has one, but they have been around for a very long time, and I really like their augers a lot, which makes me think their mower might be OK.

If you are going to go to war with your land, and you will be pushing it to the limit, then you are going to have to spend a lot more money, and base your decision on being able to get parts to rebuilt it. Just remember, once you open up the land, and it's just mowing, you don't need a heavy duty mower anymore to maintain it.

On my place, I don't push the mower that hard anymore. If I have an area that's going to damage my mower, I go in with the backhoe and dig it all out, and when it starts to grow grass and weeds, then I maintain it with the mower.

WOODS is the way to go! I use a 315 here on the 656 and a C-80 on the 3-pt of the 2444 industrial and a 3-pt RM 59 on the 240. Had good luck with all of them.

Lots of good recommendations: Woods, Rino, Brown, Bushhog, etc… All good, but sometimes dealers for those brands are hard to find. Landpride is sold at every Kubota dealer and parts are easy to come by. Of course, they make light, medium, and heavy duty models. I’m satisfied with mine, but get the chain guard, not the rubber guard. I’m planning to buy a chain guard because the rubber tears over time.

Good brand medium duty used off of craigslist or marketplace would be my choice over a farm store light duty

Also consider parts availability, like seals, blades and blade bolts. I don't know who actually makes the cutter for TSC, but that's what you'd want to look into for parts availability.
TSC will have the parts for their KK brand. I just ordered new gear box for a 26 year old one I bought at TSC. Was only $500 in 1998 for a 5 ft one. I just bought a nice LandPride 6 ft one, $2900. For mowing 5 acres, you won't put much time on it.

Looking at our local TSC, I don’t think the Countyline implements are made by KK anymore. They don’t look like KK products.

They might not be KK anymore. But the gearbox on most of those are the same size/boltpattern. Mine is actually not KK brand, I bought it before TSC started carrying KK, but it will take the gearbox.

the landpride I bought is the light duty model, basically for grass only. They told me that, and I was OK with that. I'm mowing hay fields and pasture. Unfortunately it does not have chains, only the rubber guard. My old mower has NO guards, so this is a step up for me. I wanted a twin rotary, but the price was too high for me, 2.5 times the price to get another foot.

6' is the way I'd go at 40 hp.

As for brand, I'd probably lean towards the TSC unit at those prices unless you can find something used at auction or FB marketplace. I own two J-Bar rotary cutters which have been fine for me.
I think the 40 hp is engine hp not PTO. The PTO is rated as being 35, so 6x5=30. 5 surplus horsepower for when the going gets tough.

What horsepower is a New Holland tc40?

40 hp

Engine
Displacement122 cu in (1,994 cu cm)
Gross Power40 hp (30 kw)
Number of Cylinders4
Power Measured @2600 rpm
PTO Power35 hp (26 kw)
