It depends on what you need it for. 42 is getting awfully small. Actually, the reason my 48 has not been used much is because after I mowed the fields the first time, my neighbor offered to mow them with his 6 foot brush hog for a small price. I went for it and thought I would use my mower to tidy up now & then. But then I purchased a VenTrac with front mower.

After much searching, I found this used Land Pride. Haven't seen it but the dealer says it's a 48" shear bolt type in very good condition for $650.00. Is this a good buy? Can you tell which model it is?

I'm looking to pick up a rotary cutter sometime in the next week or 2. I have a WTB listing on CL, but nothing comes up I'll buy new. The Kubota stealership sells Land Pride which seems to be "farm grade" quality. They quoted me $1425.00 for a 42" slip clutch model with a shield. This is something I will use maybe once a month. Another dealer quoted me $895.00 for a 48" Kodiak shear pin model. I need something with maneuverability around trees in the woods, so 48 inches would be as big as I would want to go. I like the price ($799.00) of the County Line model at Tractor Supply. Anyone have any experience with that model? I see they also offer a 2 wheeled model for a few bucks more. I do have some sidehills---is the 2 wheeled model any more stable?
I am using a Woods RCC42 Rotary Cutter on my BX23. It does the job but I have broke the shear pin once and I guess it will break again even with the stump jumper. If there is a next time I will get one with a slip clutch. When I get in real thick 3 foot high growth I I do not feel my machine would be happy with anything bigger than 42" cutter.

Update! That used Land Pride got sold out from under me. The dealer had it less than 24 hours. He says he'll sell me a new International 42" for $930, including tax. I don't think I've come across this brand yet. Here's the pic he sent.

Looks like the mower has a couple places where rainwater will collect and pool.

I just went through the same search for a rotary cutter. I started at TSC but their RC's looked too cheaply built to me. I asked a few questions while I was there but no one was knowledgable about what they were selling. I ended up buying a new Woods HC48 at my Kubota dealer for $1200. I went there thinking I was going to buy a Landpride 48" but they only had a 42" so I went with the 48" Woods. The dealer is filling the gearbox with oil, greasing the unit, spot painting a few chips that developed while sitting in the yard, registering the unit with the manufacturer and is delivering it for free.

The dealer where I bought my Kubotee got back to me today with something a little more economical than the Land Pride. How about a Taylor Pittsburgh 48 inch rotary cutter designed specifically for SUT's? I don't know if it was BS but he said they more or less designed to these for the BX series. A special order would run me $1100. If I can wait until the next truck load (next spring!), I can get one for $1000.
I'm going to pop in there tomorrow morning and pick up a brochure. Any thoughts?

Give Ken Sweet a call as he is a TBN forum sponsor in good standing.

You could also buy a good 48 inch flail mower from Ken for what you are doing.

The flailmower has a rear roller the width of the mower which is used to keep the mower from scalping.

The rear roller rides on the ground to stabilise the mower and regulate the flail mowers cutting height and would help you with slope mowing as long as the slope angle is no greater than what the tractor can operate on which is 15degrees normally.

A rear or front mounted flail mower is also much shorter than a rotary cutter and does not have a rear wheel assembly sticking further out as well.

As it is late in the year I would check with Ken Sweet first about a small flail mower for your needs.

Looks like a little more than I want to get into for an occasional use implement.
I stopped by the stealership yesterday and picked up a brochure. I scanned the rotary cutter info. I like the idea that it's made for a subcompact. And I can get it in orange!

My local Craig's list is full of them. Looks like the going price is about $425 for a name brand 48" cutter. I would hold out on a good used one. I would not worry about the shear pin. I replace one pin about every 100 hours. It takes 10 minutes and cost $2.
