George he is saying the 6" side facing the next pole so as your reference it would be front to back. I have always notched my post and let the header sit on the post and then run a carriage bolt thru the post and header. This way the post is taking more of a load than a lag screw or carriage bolt.

Okay, I got it. My design has poles on the interior as well so that confused me.....but that's not hard to do!:D

Out of curiousity, for those saying the wind load is the primary stressor -- what factor are you using in your calculations for snow load? Many of us live in the northern climes, and an unheated pole barn can accumulate a LOT of snow on its roof...
