Need some info about Ram 2500 with the Cummins engine

Have an 08 with cummins and 3:73 rears 6spd auto with 126000 miles and get 17mpg in local driving 20.5 highway. Good solid truck very pleased

man what happen to the mpg sence 07? my 07 2500 gets 20 mpg most all the time and ya'll are talking 14 and 15 mpg.

I think it has a lot to do with the emissions bull crap

First off, with a Cummins, you have to hand calculate the MPG. Mine shows 21.5 mpg with the overhead computer, but gets about 14 to 17 mpg depending on how and where I drive. Its a 2004, auto, quad cab, 4x4 with stock rims and tires and 4.10 gears. Its tough to compare the newer with the older trucks. Generally the 6.7 gets worse mileage than the older 5.9's, but not always.

I can't comment on a 2013 with the Urea fluid. I have a 2012 with 15,000 miles so far. Around town or back road driving I see 14 or 15 mpg. Open highway/interstate I've gotten as good as 18, but average around 15 or 16 with my driving. That is hand calculated. Towing about 10,000 or 11,000 pounds mpg's drop to about 11 or 12. Truck is stock.

Stong engine though. I feel confident with it while pulling a trailer. My friend has 2012 F250. I will admit, pulling the same trailer, his truck feels stronger. He gets around 18 or 19 mpg empty.

X2 on the lie-o-meter. That overhead trip meter only gives you a rough idea. Depending on how you drive and if you have any performance chips you can get up to 31mpg and actually only be getting 18.


I had a 2005 3500 srw g-56 with stock height tires up to 35" A/T tires and I would get 18-19 mpg regularly regardless. Towing was less, but I found my best mileage was cruising 50-55 and I got as high as 21mpg ONE TIME in the summer. All mileage numbers were hand calc-ed at fill ups. Being able to gett 400+ miles out of a tank made for pretty accurate mileage numbers. Winter was a little worse due to the different fuel run in the northern climate.

I don't know what the deal is with the overhead lie-o-meters on Cummins trucks. I've had several cars, and the meter was always right on the money for your fuel mileage. For some reason, on the Cummins trucks, they are always off, and maybe thats the same for all makes of diesel trucks. My truck also has a chip on it, which may have something to do with it.

I have a 2012 2500 4x4 with about 19,000 miles on it now. I get anywhere from about 11 - 16 mpg with it. I am pulling either a 16' bumper pull, or a 24' gooseneck MOST of the time with it. It seems to have 'broken in' at about 10,000 miles, where the mileage got a little better.

Before this, I had a 2007 that was basically the same truck, but with the 5.9L. It seemed to get slightly better fuel mileage.

I find that my mileage increases by about 10% when I slow down from 72 mph to about 63 mph on the Atachafalaya Basin Bridge, which is an 18 mile bridge on I-10 with a lower speed limit.

And, it seems that the meter is always about 10% better than actual mileage too.

The emissions killed the mileage on the diesels. The 2013 use DEF (diesel exhaust fluid) and are supposed to get better mileage that is offset some by the cost of the fluid.

The other big factor is speed, it seems if you can keep it below 2000 RPMs, you get much better mpg.
