Need some new treads for the F250HD

There was a time, many years ago, when General had a bit of a bad reputation, and I would not have wanted any of their tires, but for the past 20 years I wouldn't hesitate to buy Generals. And of course, Michelin/BF Goodrich/Uniroyal merged several years ago, but I don't remember right now just who bought who out. There was a time when I would not have bought a Uniroyal too, but in recent years, on passenger cars, I had good luck with them. So if I were buying new tires now, I'd buy any of those brands that met the ratings I wanted (load rating, traction, temperature, and wear) and had the tread design I wanted. I also think Goodyear (and I'm sure, some other brands) make good tires, too.

I've always used BF Goodrich. If you need them for hauling loads, specify load range D or E. The tire is a lot firmer (Higher PSI), although you sacrifice some comfort. I had load range E's on my new pickup and It felt like I was riding on steel rims.

( I have read posts from many people and it seems they rotate the fronts side to side, leave the rears be and go for front replacements at a 2 to 1 ratio. )

That's almost what I'm doing on front wheel drive cars; just don't rotate them at all. I don't know what the "experts" say today, but several years ago, one of the fleet management publications ran an article saying that, yes, tires would last longer if they were rotated every 5,000 miles, and if you did it yourself, you could save a little money, but if you had to pay someone to rotate them, it would cost more in the long run than leaving them alone.

Richard, if those are 10 ply Generals you are getting for that price I would be sold too ! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Heck I'd even consider 8 plys for that price. The prices here on all the others were only about $10 per tire less than the Michelin. The Firestone steeltrex Radials that were OEM on my first Duramax were like $120 each. Thats out the door. I can deal with a slight loss of traction for that price but I sure would like to drive a set of those Michelins one time. I hear lots of good things about them. F-350 your uneven tread wear on the outside is probably from the in balace in weight thanx to that high capacity mag on the Glock /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif Dave

Rob,

Yes they are 10 ply E range tires. I've never had one blow on me, knock on wood, and I'm usually about 20-30k with my loads.

Roatating em' every 5000 probably is good practice. If you don't rack up miles it's only a little over twice a year... my problem is the dually setup and the fact that I'd be doing it 4-5 times a year.

It is just like a Front WD car, the front tires have very lillte life left when the rears are almost new.

Hey DocsKnotInn ya' might have point /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Actually I think it is "hard charging into the corner" driving style that REALLY hurts the tires. Doesn't please the wife much either, well there's an upside to everything I guess /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

LOL /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I noticed a lot of cupping on my fronts early on. I had to slow down a bit on the on and off ramps. In mi we have a LOT of dowhnhill on ramps. Gotta go fast enough not to get run over, slow enough not to get a ticket and hopefully keep the passenger side calm as well. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif I'll get it right some day /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Sorry for the late response. My 3500 is not a dually, so I don't know if this applies. I bought my tires from the Goodyear store and they rotate for free the life off the tire.

"I bought my tires from the Goodyear store and they rotate for free the life off the tire."

Well that doesn't sound good. Why would you want the life rotated off your tires for free and from the manufactuer. Sounds like a way to sell more tires. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
