Be sure and use stainless steel ones. Otherwise, they'll just be rusted stobs after a couple seasons. Don't predrill. Just drive them in with the drill. Just set it at a setting where it'll ratchet a bit when the screw bottoms out.

Don't do it. Steel screws will fall out and end up in your tire giving you a flat. That, and they wear out very fast, aren't going to last long in the tire when you start pushing, and aren't as effective as chains. If you insist on studs, take it to a tire shop and pay to have the tires drilled and studded or buy the stuff to properly stud it.

THANK YOU ALL

As a result of another reconsideration, my previous decision to studd my brand new R4`s has been reversed by me. I got a lot of negative feedback about the whole idea of studding my tires, the damage that could be done and even if it would work at all in my case has lead me to this decision.

I will probably muddle through this winter as I am and see about chains for next season. I also have a Arctic Cat 300 4x4 ATV with small plow, I can always get up the hill with it regardless of ice, in part because I can go fast up the hill, unlike my 3005 JD.

So thanks to all, I am also looking for a used blower in Ontario:)

Have you looked at Tire Chains by TireChains.com I bought rear chains form my 3320. Can't remember the price but I don't think they were too expensive. Look at it this way, they should last you a lifetime if properly installed and taken care of.

LOOKS like the joke is on me guys:D Called a dealer this morning, lady in parts says the 3005 does not have enough clearance for chains on rear or front?

Did a quick google and a guy with a 790 (exactly the same as 3005) says a negative is they do not take chains on these tractors due to clearance issues?

It'll take a set of chains with wheel spacers though. Hey, its only money !!:p

I've never seen a tractor with non adjustable rims and wheels. Usually they adjust for crop spacing, but the newer small tractors have apparently not been blessed with this feature.

My R4's are a complete JOKE in snow.

My old 2210 had Bar tires only on the rear, and Turfs on the front, and it went thru the snow soooooo much better than my 2520 does with the R4's. They're just so big and flat, they don't dig in at all.

I'm not sure why dealers push R-4's on everyone. Tractors are made to work in the dirt. The occational trip down the road is minimal wear on R-1's, yet you need the R-1 traction more than your likely to wear on-road. Seems odd to me.

It's because many tractors, especially in the 2x20 size, do double duty as lawn mowers. My R4s only tear up the lawn a little, and only get stuck a little. That's better than R1s tearing up the lawn a lot or turfs getting stuck all the time. To be honest, the one time I got stuck in the mud I don't think anything (save faster reflexes using the FEL to stop the sinking) could have helped. If you've got an Ag tractor, get Ag tires. If you've got a lawn tractor, get turfs. If you've got a tractor that does both, either get both tires and swap them as needed or get R4s.
