I just bought a 850 4x4 (later model) tractor and would like to check the valve adjustment. Can anyone let me know the adjustment procedure? I read .008 each but no mention of engine hot or cold. Some list .008 intake and .006 exhaust which to me is backward.

Anyone help on this? S/N 24406

Your JD850 has the same engine as my Yanmar YM2610.

Did you look all of this up in the Deere TM1192 Technical Service Manual yet?

I did look it up and could find nothing complete. What I found listed .008 clearance but let it open as to what temp the engine should be at. I guess John Deere must not know what Yanmar required and left it out.
I will probably adjust to -008 hot, as it will only increase when cold. Can't go wrong. But it would be nice if someone could document it for everyone at least on this forum.

Service manual(TM1192) say to check every 600 hours when cold. .008 for both Look on page 20-05-1

I just bought the tractor and don't have a manual. I figured that the valve adj was neglected and wanted to get it done. Not sure if I will keep the tractor or not. Thanks for clearing that up on the correct engine temp for the .008 clearance adj.

Setting them cold is the norm. If you are curious, check them warm too. I think you will be surprised at how little they change.
