SouthernX,
Did you get a sprayer yet? The TSC in Shawnee, OK has that sprayer currently priced at $229 and I plan to pick one up this weekend. I also have sandbur very bad on 5 acres. Have you controlled sandbur before? What are your plans for dealing with it?

Yes, I bought the one you are talking about. I haven't got to use it yet though. As for the sandburrs... They took over 3 of my 5 acres at the end
of last summer. What a mess. I should have applied a pre-emergent this Spring but I didn't really have the time as I am working out of town through the week right now. ::( So, my next plan of attack is to

1) Get rid of the broadleaf weeds
2) Possibly reseed some of the acreage
3) Fertilize to get what grass is left growing

My hope is that I can get enough of the yard growing again that it will choke-out any sandburrs. But if that fails then I will apply a post-emergent to deal with the sandburrs.

If anyone sees a problem with my plan or has a better plan please let me know.

Hi All,

1) I need to apply some broadleaf weed killer and also some fertilizer. Which should I apply first or can they be applied at the same time?

2) As I mentioned in another post I have about 3 acres to treat. I've priced both weed killer and fertilizer at TSC, Orscheln's, Lowes, Home Depot... The weed killer is expensive enough but the liquid fertilizer is off the chart. Does anyone have any ideas on how to liquid fertilize my acreage without going broke (literally!).

I would apply the broadleaf herbicide a couple weeks before fertilizer. There's no use in feeding weeds.
There's really not a cheap way to apply liquid fertilizer. There's not even a cheap way to do granular this year, but it's a lot cheaper than liquid.

Has anyone tried taking "granular" fertilizer and mixing it with water so it can be applied with a sprayer? Is such a thing possible? Seems like you could. After all, the "granular" stuff is meant to break down with water so it can be aborbed into the soil. I just want to put down some 13-13-13. Crazy idea I know, but I had to ask.

I really don't know, but it seems to me that the granular would not go into solution right away and thus it would plug up the filter and the nozzle tip. Guess you would also have to figure how much granular per gallon to give it a try. Good luck. The rising fuel prices always push up the fertilizer prices.:(

Use Grasshopper and 1 pint to the acre of grazon ... they will mix together and do both the fertilizer and weed application in one pass ... remove the screen in the filter and agitate well .... done deal.
