Update.
I talked to the locksmith. He said they had padlocks specifically designed not to be cut (He probably meant by *normal* means) or beaten into opening. The trick is finding something with the holes that they will fit. It would probably be next week before I can head into "the city" to take a look.

3/8" stainless steel chain is $26/ft! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif Those dang steel prices I guess.

I can get a motorcycle alarm for around $300.

I may just be better off parking it in my pole barn, throwing a tarp over it and parking my tractor in front of it. That and getting an alarm on it. Or maybe build a small shed closer to the house.....

I definitely put the cart in front of the horse on this one /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Locks-locks and more locks. Every time I think of this problem the following advice comes to mind.
In 1954 the Major told us that a mine field only slows down the enemy.
If you want to stop them then you need a machine gun placement covering the mine field 24/7.

I've often thought I'd like to have a well trained gorilla to hang around the yard.
He'd work for peanuts. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Do you have an all night light on in the area? Theives hate to be exposed and the light makes them feel vulnerable.

If you chain it, try to do so from the bottom so access is very difficult. They will have to bend over and work on it from an exposed position.

If it was me, and I couldn't lock it up in a building, I'd drill a hole in the ground with an Iron eye bolt coming out of it. Park the ATV over it with a very short length of chain that I could attach to the bottom of the ATV.

Next level of security would be to sink posts around it close enough to gether to make it impossible to move it, but allow easy access. Then I'd do like the forest rangers do and have one of them slide into a sleeve in the ground that I could lock at ground level.

Basically it's one size pipe set in concrete cut off at ground level. The other pipe is one size smaller and slides into the one set in concrete.

At ground level, you have two large pieces of steel with a hole through them. One tab on each pipe that will lock together with a heavy duty lock.

There are allot of brands out there that make keyed locks with sides that cover the exposed metal of the lock. These are very dificult to cut or break off when locked. I have one by Master that I used on a storage unit for years until I bought my land.

The thieves will probably already know that you have the ATV before coming for it. Pretending it's broken probably wont do you any good. Once there, they will at least look at it and realize what your trying to do.

Good luck,
Eddie
