Dugster, okay I'll say right off, this is probably a dumb idea. Instead of hauling it away, for the biggest nastiest stuff is there any way for you to burry it? If si perhaps quote him a pice for burrying it or else the cost to ahve it hauled away. ~rox
Hi Rox - Maybe they allow that in France... ;) ... but not in good old Taxachusetts, USA. I can't even bury a stump... that came out of the ground in the first place. And burying asphalt is like a capital crime. :( Burying asphalt... unless you happen to work for my town's DPW... will get you more years in the slammer than murder one!!!

Rocks are okay to bury... Thank Gawd... and I am not totally sure about concrete and steel pipe. But this is a tiny yard... I think I mentioned that before as one of the main reasons he wishes to use my services instead of a full-size hoe. The property is also being readied for resale... so no way this guy is going to take any chances with something like that.

i guess things are different down here, we have landfills where you are charged by the pound to dump anything but food and toxic stuff. They have a special area for green and for rock/concrete. lands a little cheeper down here and so is trash i guess. lol
i was tossing and turning thinking about how to get the guy to pay me for hauling stuff off, on one hand i was thinking my rate per hour and just stay on the clock but then you get into those people with a stop watch so i came up with a slightly less than my rate charge per load for debris. On your deal you will have alot of windshield time so i dont know how i would go about that. Then of corse im worried about my equipment while im off dumping, sometimes you just really need a helper but thats a hole other can of worms.

Yep... not easy being a one man show. I am so sick of driving back and forth from dump & fill wanted sites that I could scream. No way it's going to happen on this demo job.

I always thought commercial dumps were commercial dumps... they are supposed to take anything... so what's the big deal with this mix? Is everything being recycled these days??? I can just picture me needing four roll-offs... one for each category of debris.

Doug,

It sounds like one of those PIA type jobs. The thing to do it figure out what it will cost. Whatever it takes, just come up with a number that will make it happen. Don't worry about what that number is, just figure it out. Now double it. Give that number to your client and see what happens.

Some jobs are not ment to be, but every job is doable with enough money.

I heard a guy say on a TV show that "if you have the money, I have the time."

I hear you Eddie... would be good to play it ultra-safe, but I'll bet I lose the job. I need to give it my best shot. Again, we'll see what happens on Monday. Maybe I will luck out. Otherwise, I quote without disposal... and take my chances.

In California everything is recycled. You can dump concrete with no steel for free at cement pants large construction jobs where they make gravel. Also you can recycle asphalt, they use it for road base. What would be really cool on a big job is if they had crusher and the cement and asphalt could be turned into road base, gravel sand, and used again on the project. When they tore down our old K-mart and built a Lowe's they tore up the asphalt parking lot the buildings the footings and ground or crushed all of the stuff up to make road base cement fill etc. Maybe you could talk to a water and power employee maybe he would let you dump concrete an asphalt and they could pick it up. good luck just some wild ideas David

Obviously, the two main touchy issues are the asphalt and the steel embedded in the concrete. Rocks are just rocks... and plain concrete can't be a big deal problem other weight. My best guess right now is that we are talking 50 tons of rocks and construction debris here when all is said and done. Not sure how many debris roll-offs that would be. I saw all sizes and shapes down in hurricane country, but don't really remember their ratings.

Town DPW isn't going to help on this in any way other than maybe pointing me at a good demo debris removal service if they happen to know of one. It's not their thing and they have their hands full elsewhere. This is not a public problem... this is a private/commercial one.

Dougster,

As you are building your new business consider your efforts in social networking. Somewhaere there is a whole group of probably guys, that know the answers to your quesitons. I might suggest that you try to go in person (while you are new to the business and jsut developing) rather than phoning. in other words go to DPW, not call. Go to the roll of fcompanies etc. When you are face to face people tend to be more helpful. If oyu fid the dump truck oeprators, make an appointment to swingby thier place of business a time convenient for them.

When we started farming and we didn't ahve a pennys worth of experience, mved to a city where we did not knwo a soul, we social networked. We went to the mill in person, we hung around the mill and met other farmers. We had countless other olive farmers over for cocktails and dinner. We did the same thing with our neighbors. This is how we made our contacts and they taught us our current trade.

it doesn't take that much effort to have a couple cold oens in the fridge, open a bag of chips and a can of nuts and sit on the patio and get to know people. The invitations were reciprocated and soon we had tapped into the whole social circle of olive farming. When I wanted to change mills and my hsuband didn't I picked up the phone and called the new mill I was considering changing to and asked who was in charge of their olive trees. Turns out it was the son, i simply called him, he of course had heard about the Americans who had bought mas des bories and i invited him and his wife over for cocktails. They came and brought their kids over and i had planned ahead and made all types of appetisers, enough so that the mom didn't have to cook that night. Point being through this social netwrking we got to knwo them, they got to knwo us and my hsuband felt comfortable chaning mills. I would say that now we are one of their very top clients at this new mill. All because I picked upt he phone and invieted someone over to our home.

Even thoug it takes more effort initially, face to face visits instead of phone calls, the returns are worth the investment of your time. Try to figure out a way to develope some social business networking with people who are involved in your trade.

Amrec in Charlton Ma has been taking this stuff for years,, Problem you have is imbedded steel in the concrete,, They take used asphalt, concrete, and rocks, but no metals. Your town is probably regrinding asphalt, which will return to the same.. If they are not regrinding, then that asphalt is most likely heading to Charlton.

They are supposedly regrinding 97% of it right on the spot. That ground up mix was supposed to be reused immediately as bedding for the new pavment, but if it was, I certainly didn't see it. The other 3% is still sitting by the side of the road where the old sidewalks used to be. They should remove it... but shall we take bets on it being removed vs. reburied when they eventually backfill???

Larry, you must have run into a "witches brew" mix of demo debris like this before. What have you done?
