Renze, Excellent idea! Like Du-uh why didn't we think of that a long time ago. I'll keep an eye out for a thrashed dumptruck. It expands on the idea of making a trailer out of a pickup. It isn't exactly a NASA scale heavy think sort of thing.

What do you power the hydraulics with? I would think an electric motor and pump but would listen to the voice of experience.

Patrick, we simply use the tractors own hydraulic power....
all of our tractors have external remotes, and even our pony, the 1965 Zetor 2011, with only 25 hp and 20 liter per minute, is able to dump (and pull) it. ;)

In the mid 70's when corn for silage was gaining its current level of popularity in the Netherlands, 70% of the silage trailers were made that way- an old tandem truck chassis stripped and bent together into a tongue. These trailers, 15 to 20 ton, used to have a PTO driven oil pump, because the big tipping cylinder would consume all the oil out of the tractors rear end.
These trailers gave about 2 ton load on the tow eye, which gave much better traction to the tractor than 4 wheeled wagons.

We can learn a lot by looking to the other parts of the world... vice versa, i am in the process building a straw bale shredder of the american bale processor style.. we dont have any of those machines in europe, only the ones with expensive axial fed turbines, and feed rollers that plug up...

Renze, Cool dude... I have a rear remote hydraulic connection. I don't see my little Kubota (L-4610 40 HP at PTO) being happy about two tons on the 3PH but reworking the front of the dumptruck chassis to be a goose neck hitch and dragging it with my 1 ton Cummins/Dodge PU sounds feasible.

Having just the one tractor, I wouldn't want to have to hitch and unhitch so much going from using the tractor to load the dump and then pull it.

Thanks for the ideas.

Myself, dad & brother-law all just pitched in and bought a dump truck.
It's old and junky..$800 plus another $500 for repairs and P&I
BTW it's a 1974 Ford 1ton dually.
I have 6.5 acres dad has 5 and Brett has 10
It is so nice to have a dump truck when ever needed, **** I'm moving about
300 yards of dirt myself..
Bad thing is they live about 65 miles one-way so it's always it least a
3 hour trip for one of us....
I do all sorts of cuttin welding off-road Jeep stuff.
I may end up building a dump trailer when I find most everything laying around..cheap!
This way there's no up keep $$ or running back & forth, then when someone
borrows it they get to return it without me running around.
Anyway a dump truck can be a good thing if ya find one cheap and have a
couple of good friends to pitch in on it.
I have less money in this truck than it would cost to move all the stuff I got to move around here.
We also agreed if there's money to be made...go for it!
Even though we always end up doin things for free...maybe gas & beer ;)
Now me with 2 tractors a dump trailer will fit me nice & it SHOULD always be here.....

Patrick,
The 2 ton drawbar load i mentioned, was for the 15 ton silage trailers. Our Bedford chassis based dumptrailer doesnt have that much drawbar load, it wont flip over the 2011 when attached to the high drawbar, about 80 cm above ground level. This 2011 weighs only 1500 kg.
I think a 40 hp kubota will do fine pulling a 5 ton trailer, most pickup based dump trucks have the dump box allmost above the rear axle, so when there is no cab, engine and tranny, there wont be much weight left on the front. My guess is that our Bedford tipper puts less than 1000 kg on the rear axle.
When using your Dodge to pull it, you will most probably need the electric over hydraulic dump... But maybe the dumptruck you used to converse to trailer, has one already installed.
