I have a JD 110 TLB and need a trailor to tow it w/ my chevy 2500 HD w/ a duramax eng. I have seen trailers on the web by kaufman and big tex. does any one have any expeience w/ these companies or have any suggestions? I am thinking of a 6 ton 18-20' but I do not want a deck over type. Any input would be great.

No knowledge or experience at all with kaufman, but I've looked at lots of Big Tex trailers and everything I've seen so far appeared to be very well built, but I've not actually used any of their larger trailers. I did buy a new little 4' x 8' Big Tex trailer a couple of weeks ago, primarily to haul my little Toro ZTR mower and other light loads behind my Ford Ranger pickup; a really nice little trailer.

I really like my PJ trailer. 18' dovetail, 10k GVWR. About 3100$ in WA.

I bought a 8 ton GN trailer with true 12" I beams for the frame with brakes on both axles and 25' length. The trailer itself weighs around 5600 pounds empty, so that leaves me with roughly 10k trailering capacity. I know you said that you didn't want a deck over, but compared to the bumper pull type of trailer pulls, there is no comparison on how it handles the load. Major league difference. I had to try one first to see how much of a difference it makes in the ability of your tow vehicle to handle the load. It's like the difference between you pulling with a 4 cyl S10 pickup vs your current truck.

The best part is that the brand new 2005 model complete with a spare tire, break away brakes and all cost me $3600! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif When I park this beast next to the puny looking trailers that I've seen for sale for nearly that cost that weigh 2500 pounds, I think I got a tremendous more amount of trailer for my money. Besides the frame being all 12" I beam, all the other steel on the trailer is 6" channel.

It may be overkill for what you need, but it sure makes hauling my 7000 pound Kubota L5030HSTC (with loader and 6' bush hog) much less than an adventure. Here is a picture of my tractor on this trailer. In the pic, I only have a little PHD on the back. Either way, you get an idea of what you can get for $3600.

I am not that familiar with a JD110 TLB but according to JD's website that unit is " Trans. Length-Backhoe Folded, in. (mm) 259.8 (6599) " which equats to 21.65'. At that lenght you would want a minimum of a 22' trailer, possibly even longer to give room to adjust the load for proper loading. For the weight you are towing with a "bumper" mount hitch a WD hitch is required by GM (05-06 > 7500#, for 04 and earlier > 5000#). Some even say that for the earlier models you would want to make sure that you replaced the factory hitch. (Just repeating what I hear for that statement.)

As Dargo pointed out a Gooseneck trailer would probably be best. If the trailer weighs around 3000#(rough est for that size trailer) and the TLB weighs around 7600# (from JD) you have approx 1400# of payload capacity left with a "Bumper" style hitch. Switching to a GN trailer that number will increase about 3000# and tow a lot better.

Good Luck in your search.

And welcome to TBN. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Big Tex makes a good trailer, and they make a low-boy GN 14k up to 26'. I would recommend a GN trailer over a TT for several reasons.
1. Easier to hook-up.
2. Ability to turn/backup up to 90deg.
3. Sway is basically non-existance (I've never had any)
4. Spare tire is completely out of the way of anything.
Most folks that have used both prefer GN.

I have two Big Tex trailers a 18' 70CH and a 14' 29SA and I can say they are very well built. I also have a GMC 2500HD and I have to agree with the other posters, a gooseneck beats a tag along hands down for this application.

When you said you don't want a deck over type I took that as you don't want a deck over the wheels type, the kind with no fenders, right?

I find it easier to back up a bumper pull compared to a GN. It was a 5th wheel hitch but seemed like the truck had to be moved around a lot to get the trailer to move.

I was going to buy a Kaufman trailer but it was a minimum of six to eight weeks for them to build one to my specs. Kaufman will also deliver (for a reasonable fee) and I thought the prices were O.K. I just didn't want to wait that long to get one with winter around the corner so I bought a trailer built by H&H Trailer from a dealer in PA. It has removable fenders for easier side loading, brakes on both axles, 2 5/16 hitch, 7000# drop leg jack, etc. Check out my pics of it in the photo section under other brands-Mahindra. I'm satisfied with mine, no ramps, it tilts up by pulling two pins and jacking.

George, the axles on an H&H look like they're too far forward, has that been an issue with your rig? I've been looking at them, they look like a nice trailer.
