I have a specialty need for a implement to cut edges on large landscape beds. My better half wants all the beds we have installed over the last couple of years edged next spring. EEKS!! We are talking at least a couple thousand feet of edges! I accomplished 200 feet in 1/2 a day by hand this spring.

Ideally the attachment would be 3ph, offset left and right convertible, and able to cut a clean edge vertical 3" to 5" deep and then (in my dreams) be able cut an angle back towards the vertical cut thus creating a removable wedge.

I a place called the "non real world" it could make both cuts at the same time and lift the wedge out of the hole.

A lot of the edges could be done with an attachment that was centered behind the tractor.

Any ideas out there??

Has anyone seen anthing similar being done?

I have tried renting a commercial edger but still have to cut the angle by hand and soil has to be not to wet (it will plug) and not to dry ( it will not cut ).

I haven't seen one, but I've been designing one in my mind for several months. I think you would need a coulter wheel (to cut the sod) and a plow blade following (to cut the wedge and turn the sod up and out of the trench). With a mouldboard, the impliment would be either right or left handed (but not both) since the mouldboard would have a curve to throw the sod over.

Look at the Monroe Tufline product line. Their Series PRC pasture renovator gave me the idea on how it might work. Granted those attachments are six feet wide, but the idea would be to have just one coulter wheel and one moldboard (attached the ripping shank) following the tractor, offset to one side.

I am not quite sure what you need. Do you just need a clean edge next to the landscape beds? In the past, I have rented a machine called a mini-ditcher from a local rental company. It is driven by a small gas motor and has a turning vertical blade in front. Similar to a edger but more robust. It is designed to dig a small ditch about 1/2" -3/4" wide and about 4-6" deep. I used it to cut a groove for putting down landscape edging. It works great on straight areas but requires a little muscle when making curves. On curves it makes a wider cut due to turning the machine/blade. Much faster than digging by hand and the machine is cheap to rent. I think the rental cost was about $25-35 for about 4 hrs.

bruce,
call your rental yards to see if anyone rents a machine called
trench master bed edger we use one in our landscaping company. it will cut a edge 1-4 inches deep and it throws the waste product into the bed. it cuts a L shape and will cut a fast as you can walk. this machine is pulled rather than pushed. works on straight or curved lines.

How is 'ole Bruce going to get any exercise if you guys keep finding such good solutions? Of course, I'm lazy too, so I appreciate the info. Thanks!/w3tcompact/icons/cool.gif

Out playing golf 2 weeks ago there was a maintenance man edging all the cart paths. It looked like an industrial sized edger attached to the front of his little tractor. Perhaps you could check the golf courses and get some ideas.

Thanks for all the great ideas. I will look for a trench master at the rental yards and follow up on other suggestions as well.
