Last fall I did that to a stump that was about 24" across for my sister. The stump was cut almost even with the ground, but it was going to cost her quite a bit to have it dug out. We put a box of RidX on it, covered it with heavy plastic, and then she put a decorative half barrel upside down over it with a planter on top (for looks). In March they ran their tiller over all of it and planted grass seed. Now you can't tell there was a tree there. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Not trying to hijack the thread , but , I took down 8 Bradford Pear trees 8" to 16" diameter at base, dug stumps up, big deep holes. Of course there are some roots (many) left that ran outside of the circle for digging up stumps. Now those roots are sending up shoots as much as 15 feet away. How do I kill them without killing surrounding grass?

thanks

Salt peter poured into holes drilled into the stump, after a good rain fill the holes with diesel fuel and light 'em up. Potassium nitrate works just as well.

I don't know any home remedies. I figure you can buy stump poison and be done with it. (save time and money too)

Another thing and I've see it a lot lately. No need to run your letters continuously. Something like Home Remedy To Kill Tree Stumps would be easier to read /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Dull - I had that problem at a previous house. I used round-up to do it, and it worked great. Just cut a piece of cardboard to fit around the sucker and use that to prevent overspray. Sometimes I would even bend the sucker over onto the cardboard and spray it. Don't get round-up on anything you want to keep and don't spray on a windy day. For future refrence: IF the stump was still there and fresh you could have treated that with round-up and all the roots would have been zapped, no sucker problem!

If you mix the roundup and put it in something like a dish washing detergent bottle, you can apply it directly without spraying. Apply it to the inner ring of the bark, where sprouts are most likely to appear from a fresh cut. You can also add some food coloring so you can see just where you have applied it.

Looks like a good thread to throw in my question! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I have about 5 stumps (6-10 inch diameter) that are right next to trees I want to keep. I want to get rid of the stumps but definately don't want to hurt my big nice trees in the process. One of the guys that cleared my land said to use a chainsaw to get them as low as possible and then cover it with dirt. Does this sound like a good method or could I get by with killing the stump and not hurt the tree next to it? Ohh BTW, when I say "next to" I mean within one foot.

Thanks... and not trying to hijack the thread either! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Don't add coloring to Round-up. It will make the Round-up less effective.

Be careful using Tordon. It will leach down in the soil and kill any tree or shrub having roots in the area.
