needs choke to run

I was winterizing my 8n today, and added fuel stabilizer to it. I started it up to let it circulate, and noticed that after a while, it needed choke to stay running.

You most likely have a little dirt in the jet restricting the flow of fuel. The chock increase the vacuum, so it sucks fuel past the restriction.

You'll likely need a couple of new gaskets, one between the carb & manifold, another between the two carb halfs. Also a can of Gumout Carb Cleaner or a similar product. I suggest taking the carb with you when you go get the gaskets.

If this is a tractor that sits parked for long periods, you may find allot of gook in the carb bowl. In that case I'd have one of the tractor or auto parts dealers with a chem-tank dip it over night. It will come out looking like brand new. Last one I had dipped cost me $8.00 bucks.

Sounds like a partly plugged fuel supply. Could be caused by your winterizing fluid cleaning some debris off an old fuel line. Would suggest that you just wait 'til spring and see if the problem persists. If so, you might need to clean out the carb.

Here is a thought. I normally leave my gas cap on loosly as it is not the stock cap for the 8N... After adding the winterizing fluid, I really put it on good... Could I have made a vacume situation after about 15 minutes of running.. and the choke "helped' pull more fuel in?

I'll get back out to the tractor wednesday afternoon, as I work from sunrise to sunset today...

Not sure how a 8N gas tank is vented but on my old IH / Farmalls the
gas caps have a tiny hole to let air in as fuel is being used.

If you used a non vented cap an there's no other gas tank vent
it's very possible that is what produced the problem you indicated earlier.

Sounds like you have the problem licked, wish all the tractor problem were that simple...

This cap on my tank has no visible holes on it.. so I can only assume it is non-vented, without taking it apart and seeing if there are any venturies that escape from behind the gasket.

I hope this is the answer.. it is is... I may take it in to the barn/shop and add a vent to the tank lid with my dremil tool.... off hte tractor of course... would hate to explode and burn with the tractor.. in the barn.

The 8N has a vent in the tank. There are no baffles in the tank, so the fuel may splash out a vented cap.

Ok, here is the followup on my 52 8N that started to need choke to run... then eventually died anyway, with or without choke.

I went out this morning armed with a bunch of suggestions from people here, and would have like to try them all individually to see what the actual culpret was.. but instead used the shotgun approach, and did all the sugestions. End result was good... tractor runs without choke. As far as i can tell ( keeping fingers crossed ).
Ok, here are a few of the things I learned, and tried while fixing this problem.
The fuel bowl at the gastank valve has enough gas to run the engine about 30 seconds
And then wont start till you turn the fuel on ( dooh! ) Nearly had a heart attack when i went out there and it would only run for 30 secs.. then wouldn't restart.. then remembered to turn on fuel!

Next, I checked for loose connection at carb to manifold. Beleive it was good, but loosened and re-tightened anyway.
Checked connection from manifold to block.. was surprisingly loose!.. not wobly loose.. but loose enough that the first turn on the 2 inside bolts did not require and torque from me to start turning.
I also checked the elbow connection from the gasline to the carb. It is damaged slightly, and I have repaired it with jb-weld.

Gas in tank looked like it had moisture in it ( drops )so I added clean fuel w/ stabilizers, etc, and fired it up. Re-adjusted the card, as I had fiddled with it last time thinking it was a mixture problem.

Runs fairly well now. As a side benefit, it no longer blows sooty exhaust. When I got it it smoked just a tad.. sooty exhaust... figured it may be a rich carb. Well now, it barley has any visibly exhaust at all.. and it is not black.
Guess that manifold could have been the problem.. coupled with possible fuel problems.
