Buying Advice Negotiating?

Negotiation is definitely doable for a private sale. Just do you homework first, so you have a good idea what you are looking at and going prices. I have never paid the original asking price for a piece of used equipment, and I think the sellers started higher than they really expected to get, just so they could negotiate. Those that won't usually say so, in one way or another, in their adds. I would start with Craig's List, maybe Seach Tempest CL, if you are willing to haul a bit. Given some time, you should be able to find a nice machine within 100 miles, max. I expect most dealer's used inventory is what is left over from whatever someone hasn't been able to sell on their own.

Or, as in the case of my current L3400, a private seller had gotten busy, taken delivery of his new tractor, and dumped it a the dealer's for sale. I looked at it at the dealership (I first saw it on Craig's List, however), but closed the deal with the consignor- who still had to give some money to the dealer, per their arrangement.

The tractor's mentioned above are, I think, on a local horse farm, which means they were used there, not by a hobby farmer type like me, who gives his tractor's a silly amount of TLC. Not that anything is wrong with them... in fact, they might just be a great value for whoever finally buys them. These might be them? (I see 4 altogether, and the barns look like a farm I once bought some hay from)

At least two/three times a week I see scam adds on craigslist that hijack photos from his ads.

In a perfect world, I think buying from the owner, who has used and taken care of the tractor, is preferable, but there may be fine machines out there that are being sold by a "dealer"... maybe a guy who sees something being under-priced, gets it, and resells it for market value. Still, I like talking face to face to the seller/owner to get a sense of his values and attitudes towards machinery. I was under the impression that the two tractors I listed were from a working horse farm's changing inventory, but I really don't know that.

The two tractors you listed were completely legit - I checked out the site, and they also sell on Ebay. My comment about the scams was something I noticed on craigslist as I searched all around the Va sights. The scammers are taking his photos and using them in phishing ads. Typical scenario - unbelievably low price, asking for text messages only or gmail/yahoo email addresses.

A friend and her husband, both naive to C-list and internet shopping were looking for motor home. They saw one on C-list for a really low price. They called and talked to a nice lady who described it and what it had on it, etc, but found out instead of being down along the river, about 2 hr. drive away from them, it was really out in Kansas, they are in Ohio and it was advertised to be in Athens (uh, oh!). The "lady" said she could get it here and they could test it out for a few day before deciding on it. She told the story at a knitting circle meeting and all the girls said "SCAM!", even her granddaughter knew it was. She didn't say when they had to send the money, I'll bet they had to send something before they would drive it back here. I told the wife to tell her to ask them the address where it was located and they would have a friend in Kansas City drive over and check it out. I said I bet they would not hear from her again.
